How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal after utilizing the second transfer is to start a business selling charcoal to provide for my family. I chose this business because the high cost of paraffin and cooking gas has gone too high making charcoals to have a high demand. Once I get the money I will construct a store for the charcoal which I will be buying directly from the ones making them and selling them in large quantities.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I would like to applaud GiveDirectly for the good job that it does by changing the lives of many people. Initially, we had to travel long distances in search of fresh water. Since the time GiveDirectly started giving unconditional cash, people fixed fresh water taps in their homes and we do not travel longer like before. For me, I did not fix water because I had other touching needs which needed attention. I don't think there's anything that GiveDirectly doesn't do well because I have not encountered any.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the second transfer, I wanted not only to invest in something but ensure it also makes a mark or a symbol for remembering GiveDirectly. Therefore, I bought six goats for KES 24000.00. I chose goats over cows because they are more resistant to drought. Thereafter, I bought a standard modern bed and a mattress for KES 8000.00 because I used to sleep on a traditional bed with a torn mat. I also paid KES 6000.00 for school fees for my two children who were almost to be sent out of school due to school fees. Since they had tattered school uniforms, I bought two pairs for each one amounting to KES 2000.00. Thereafter, I bought five bales of maize flour for KES 6000.00 to ensure food security at home and saved the remaining amount.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 am. I Was just at home preparing lunch. When I heard a ringtone message from my phone. When I checked it out felt so happy. This is because I have never received such an amount of money before. I was just alone at home, I immediately called my spouse to inform them about the money. He felt so happy and he was lack of words. I knew I would be able to boost my small business. This would increase the income and profits. We are so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Adding stock to my small business of selling charcoal is the biggest difference in my daily life. I depend on this business to meet daily household basic needs and school fees for my children. The business was not doing well because the stock was so small and we had used some money for household items. I was so stressed because the business could collapse at any time. I spent KES 20,000 to boost this business and it's now doing well. The profits that I get now are much better compared to previous days. I can meet all the basic needs and I have saved some amount for school fees When the school opens. I no longer get stressed or worried because I know my tomorrow is better. I wish to keep it and expand in the future. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us to expand our business and live a better life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 on purchasing six goats. This is a good investment that I had always wanted to start but I did not have the money. Goats reproduce faster and help during an emergency. I am so grateful because I have fulfilled this wish. I spent KES 20,000 to add stock to my small business of selling charcoal. I have enough stock and I get good income and profits to meet other basic household basic needs. For the rest of the money, I bought food and clothes for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The financial situation in my house is wanting. My husband is a motorbike rider and I have a small business. I sell charcoal for a living. We already own twelve goats. With these transfers, we intend to use approximately KES 48,000 and add twelve more goats. In a year or so, we shall sell them and make good returns. Them we can run our household without much financial strain. The remaining amount will be split between food and school fees accordingly.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was happy to spend the Christmas holidays with my family back at home. I got to see my siblings, parent and other relatives in Jila village. I was also glad to enjoy some rain in December. Right now it feels like the rain never happened but we are hopeful it might pour in April.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
As I mentioned, we rely on my charcoal selling business. Lately, we do not have enough trees to burn. That means there is little or no production. That affects our finances greatly. We only have enough for food and nothing else.
