How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I sell locally made doughnuts by the roadside. people prefer them for breakfast thus they are usually on high demand in the morning hours leaving me idle for the better part of the day. I, therefore, have new plans to save some money to raise capital for starting up vegetables business. With this, I will not only have an additional source of income but I will have a more productive day that will save me from a lot of idle talks with my neighbors.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
It is amazing how the whole village that was marked by local doughnut business all over has transformed. There are still a few people in this kind of business, but they have other businesses alongside it. The idea of enrolling every village member and giving us an equal amount of money without being biased was great. I have no complaints but to thank Give Directly for their support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Livestock farming has been of great help to our family, especially in the payment of school fees for our children. When we received the second transfer we bought three goats for 12000 KES. I plan to sell some of them in the future once they will have given birth to raise money for purchasing a cow because they are more beneficial in terms of milk provision and additional cows once they reproduce. 20000 KES I spent on a solar panel for our household use. I have been using lantern lump in my lifetime but it is expensive when it comes to budgeting for kerosene considering the current rise in fuel prices. I have not only cut on the cost of kerosene but my children to have enough lighting for their studies. I am glad I currently have a decent sleeping place after acquiring both a bed and mattress worth 14500 KES. Previously, we slept on the ground on a mat. We not only ended up with painful ribs in the morning, but we could not get enough sleep due to the bites from crawling insects. The remaining 6000 KES I paid in school for children's primary school fees. This both cleared the arrears he owed the school and paid for part of next term's school fees.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my first transfer, I felt so good. It was late in the evening and I was just at home preparing supper for my family members. In the process, I got a message notification on my phone. When I checked the message, I was shocked to see an Mpesa message. I was least expecting any Mpesa message from anyone. By keenly looking into the message, I could not control my joy to realize that it was the GiveDitecyly's transfer. What a happy moment? Carried out with the excitement, I paused from cooking and respectfully went to inform my husband. At that moment, my mind was pre-occupied with the thoughts of how we would carry out the process of building a new house because the current house is very small. I had never received such amount of money in my lifetime.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life since I began receiving my transfer is owning a newly built and spacious house. Although the house is not yet fully built, I have begun sleeping in it together with my four children. I am a happy mother, and this feeling I experience more often whenever I see my children spending in their own room where I can check them at will. Previously, they used to spend at their grannies house hence I could not easily check on them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfer to build a new spacious and better house. The transfer helped me to buy building materials coding KES 40,000 which I usef to build a two bedroom house. I knew that by executing this goal, my children would be able to get a free bedroom where they would be spending instead of always overcrowding at their grannies house. I also spent part of my transfer to buy 3 goats costing KES 3000 each. I look forward to selling them at the end of the year at KES 5000 each in order to buy a cow from which I shall be able to obtain milk.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I want to finish building my house because I am sleeping outside because it has no roof. I do not have a bed and a mattress I am sleeping on a mat and I have a dream to get a good bed with a mattress so that I can sleep comfortably with my husband. The remaining amount of the transfer I need to start a saloon business here at home because I am a hairdresser and I need to buy the equipments and tools so that I can start a saloon business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have nothing to make me happy in life! I only got 10 kilograms of rice and 5 kilograms of beans as a food relief from the county government and this is the only food which brought happiness and joy in my house because it sustained us for 3 days and then our life situations came back to normal ( hardship and hunger is the greatest problem in my house.)
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Hunger is the biggest challenge we are facing here in my house. My house collapsed and I tried to build it but I do not have money to complete building it.I do not have a reliable means of getting money because the business I rely on of charcoal burning cannot sustain the needs of my house and therefore I am expiriencing hardship in my house.
