How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Upon completion of my original goal of building a new house, I developed a new plan of buying a new bed and mattress. For the past three years, I had been spending on the floor because my bed got spoilt and I was unable to repair it. I had been occasionally spreading my very old matress on the floor, although it had been a very difficult experience. Severally, I have caught severe cold during raining seasons, but I had to soldier on since there was no way out for me to overcome that problem. Since I acquiered a new bed, I have witnessed a great improvement in my health condition. I have been sleeping more comfortably than before. I highly appreciate GiveDircetly for such an amazing support.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in enrolling all the recipients in its program without discrimination. It first begins by sensitizing community and informing them on how they work whenever they have identified a community to work with. As a result, they experience smooth operation because the community members are always made aware in advance on what is expecetd from them. In contrast, there is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my second transfer on buying a solar system worth KES 32,000. Previously, we had been using a lantern as a source of lighting although it had been providing an inadequate lighting system. Since I bought it, I have been having sufficient lighting in all the three rooms within my house. Secondly, my school going children have been able to carry on with their night studies with less straining. Lastly, I spent the the rest of the transfers, KES 2100 on buying food stuffs for my household. By buying food in bulk, whatever I bought have served us to date, a situation that has relieved me from the burden of doing hard casual labour to provide for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9am when I was just sitting at home meditating where I could go to get something to do so that I earn some money; I received a message in my phone. When I looked at it, it was the first transfer from GiveDirectly. I ululated in happiness since I didn’t expect such a message at my lowest moment.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially my life was so poor; I used to work from hand to mouth. Sleeping hungry was not a new thin in my family and it was almost becoming a norm. The house I lived in was like a slam and my children had no good clothes like the other children in the community. Thanks to GiveDirectly for coming through. By their aid, I was able to construct a good house; I also bought good clothes for my children and made a good stock for food.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I was living in a small congested house, I decided to construct a spacious house that would make my family and I comfortable. I also bought some clothes for my children both school uniforms and civilian clothes because the ones they had were old and worn out. Thereafter, I saved the remaining amount for the family upkeep because it was a drought season where food and water were very scarce.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was married as a second wife and in my household, I don't have any assets at all. Receiving this money means I will buy ten goats and a plot of land 50 by 100 which it's still KES 20,000. I tend to open a small kiosk to sell household items because shops are 3 kilometers away from where a stay. I can borrow loans using my title deed and stabilize my kiosk.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband does masonry work and two months ago he got a contract to build two classrooms in the nearby primary school. This brought joy because he had been around without a job for a long period. He can now provide basic needs and pay school fees.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
With the prolonged drought in my area getting food and fresh water to drink has always been the problem. I have to pay KES 100 for twenty liters of the dam water. This challenges me to provide for my family with all money I get I spend mostly on water.
