How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since the first transfer I received, I am working hard to keep every project I started running towards achieving the expected outcome. Even though I am still left with one year to complete my ongoing studies in college, I have never stopped planning. I have a new goal to venture into the retail business, which in my projection will precede buying a maize milling machine. I gear the two to increase income generation for my family in the future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The work was executed excellently by GiveDirectly in our village, and that elevated livelihoods in most households to date. Educating the community on the entry-level was so important that everyone who received the transfer would always refer to the materials they left us with. We were keen on the security details that ensured the safety of our transfers. Every step of the process was good and I am grateful for the support my household received.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a student enrolled in a Diploma course in Mechanical Engineering at the moment, and running other businesses and projects that demand time has not been possible. When I received the second transfer, I saw it appropriate to invest in livestock where I bought two heifers each, KES 20000. With the support of my immediate family members, I am rearing them with the hope of selling them out to establish other future goals. Even though I am still a bachelor and funding my studies, I am working hard to create a tangible wealth that will support my future family. I added the remaining amount to my savings and paid part of my school fees. I am yet to complete the last year of my studies; hopefully, I will be done in time to work on the projects I am currently planning.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was almost 9 pm and I was in my house preparing myself to go to bed. I had just gotten there from college when I thought of switching on my phone to check for any missed calls or new messages. We are not usually allowed to have our phones switched on while in college and that is why I had to switch it off. I had however earlier on been called by some people in my neighborhood telling me that the transfers had been sent. Mine had delayed. When I switched on my phone, I saw that I had a new message. I hurriedly opened it and I was so happy when I read that I had too received the KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I thanked God for it. That day, I went to bed happier than ever.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a very big difference in my life. Having managed to join college, I now see a brighter future for me. The sheep and the calf that I was able to buy with the transfer, are going to help me in getting money for paying for my college fees since I can sell some of the offspring when they will have reproduced and multiply in number. This is all thanks to GiveDirectly for supporting us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 16000 of my recent transfer on buying 20 iron sheets. I bought them because I have a plan to build another bigger house. The house that I have been living in is small and hence the space is not enough to accommodate any guest visiting my household. I also bought 4 sheep at a total cost of KES 20000. The sheep are my future investment since I can sell some when they will reproduce and multiply in number. Other than that, I also bought a calf at KES 16000. I bought it so that it could also be my future investment when it calves. I had some other money with me which I had gotten from selling some of my cocks. I added the money that I got from the sales to the transfer and it helped me in paying part of my college fees. I had stayed at home for a while after finishing my secondary school studies since I didn't have money to pay for my college fees. I come from a humble background and I have many younger siblings. My parents were thus not able to send me to college. As a result, I started rearing chickens and planting vegetables to earn a living. The money that I was making from the sales of my produce was little and was only enough to sustain my basic needs. I am hence grateful to GiveDirectly for coming up with this program of helping the needy in the society.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improved hearing. I have a problem with my ears which has rendered me partially deaf. This problem has denied me so many opportunities including furthering my studies after clearing secondary school. I have been to different hospitals seeking treatment but I have not gotten it due to lack of money. I was to undergo surgery which I was required to pay KES 20000 but I was not able to raise the amount since I have siblings in school who also need support. So when I get this transfer I will undergo the surgery and hope that I will be able to further my studies after since I will be able to hear well.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have a small garden where I have planted vegetables whereby I have been selling to my neighbors to sustain my personal needs and food. Despite my hearing problem, I am happy that I have the energy to practice farming with a fair yield and I can live independently. This has brought joy and happiness into my life and I am hopeful that one day I will raise the money to get treatment for my problem.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The Challenge I am currently facing is hearing impairment. This problem has limited my potential. I had plans of seeking employment in a security company however with difficulty in hearing has made me do casual jobs like weeding people's farms with minimal income. Even with the small garden that I have the yield is not sufficient to receive treatment.
