How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We have a plot in our neighboring trading center and we are currently building a house that we will partition into two rooms. It is my wish to open a stationery shop in one of the rooms if I get the capital. In my region, there are many schools and people go to far places looking for a bookshop. Currently, I am praying for my husband to get a permanent job so that he can get money to support me to achieve this since he is a doctor.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly enrolled all the eligible households in our village and never asked for bribes in order to enroll us. In addition, they never judged or treated us according to our social status or what we owned. To me, this is what she did best and I do not see anything they did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My immediate neighbor usually plants different kinds of crops and my chickens have been destroying her crops. Because of this, she requested that I should not be leaving them to walk freely and I had to always feed them while inside. Due to this, they stopped laying eggs and this affected me financially since I depend on poultry keeping and subsistence farming. I am happy that the transfers enabled me to fence my farm and compound and I no longer have to worry about them not laying eggs anymore. After spending KES 29000 on fencing my farm and compound, I spent KES 14000 to buy a heifer as an investment that I can rely on in case of an emergency. I still have KES 7000 that I am planning to use in expanding our current chicken coop after spending KES 2500 on food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a early in the morning when I received a call from a friend. When I finished taking with her, There was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money before. I knew GiveDirectly would fulfill their promises. I immediately called my spouse to inform him of the money. He felt so happy too. We stayed for one week planning on how to spend it. The first priority was to buy a water tank for storing clean water for domestic uses. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Purchasing a water tank is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because I no longer walk for a long distance to collect clean water for domestic uses. This was so demoralizing and tiresome. I had to walk up very early in the morning everyday to get the water from the river. I would start my day feeling very exhausted. I had always wished to own a water tank but I didn't had the money to buy. I do casual jobs and small scale farming, I plant vegetables and sell eggs. This earns me small income which I use it on other basic household items. I had no extra money to save. Currently I feel so happy because I have a water tank. This has anabled me to save time which I could have used to walk to the river. I get clean water for drinking. We are no longer exposed to water related diseases. We get water for domestic uses. I have devoted much of my time on farming. I look forward to seeing myself better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 21,000 to purchased a water tank for storing clean water. This was always a big challenge to me. I would walk for a long distance to collect clean water from the river for domestic uses. I spent KES 23,000 to purchase a heifer. My children sometimes could miss to get milk. I will be able to get enough milk when it reproduce in the next few months. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my family members. I feel so happy because GiveDirectly boosted our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I did a diploma in accounts but I have not been able to get a job and therefore my husband bears all the responsibilities of our family and his siblings' since he educates 2 of them with the little money that he earns from his job. Receiving this money will mean that I will set up a boutique business in Kipsuter that will support the income that we get from his job. We plan on adding another cow to boost milk production since the amount that we get is for consumption. Adding another cow will mean that we will be able to consume and sell some and earn money from that.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband is a medic but does jobs on contract and for the last 6 months, he has been working and my family has not lacked anything and so this has brought me joy and given me the motivation to start a business and support him.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constrain is the major challenge that I face currently because I rely on my husband to support our family and also to support his siblings. He shoulders so many responsibilities that I always feel that he is straining and so having another source of income will ease the strain on him.
