How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My plan revolves around using the transfers I receive, along with additional support from my parents, to sustain my education until I complete my A levels. After that, I aspire to enroll in college and pursue a course in medicine. To make this journey possible, I need to dedicate more time to my studies and focus during these remaining months.
I have a strong desire to join college and study medicine after completing my A levels. Coming from a humble background, I am determined to work hard and change the narrative of our home so that one day, my parents can enjoy the fruits of their sacrifice in sending me to school. This is why I’ve been using my transfers to pay my fees, ensuring that I’m not sent home due to outstanding balances. This allows me to focus fully on my studies.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I want to express my gratitude to GiveDirectly for making it possible for me to stay in school without interruptions. With two other siblings in upper classes, it was challenging for my parents to cover school fees for all three of us, especially since they rely on casual jobs and small-scale farming. When I started receiving transfers from GiveDirectly, I decided to use them to cover my school fees, allowing my parents to focus on supporting my younger siblings. I’m currently in Form Three, and since I had an outstanding fee balance, I used my recent transfer of $102 to clear it. I didn’t want to risk being sent home for the balance, as I need to stay focused on my studies.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Givedirectly transfers have made me a young man full of hope. My goal is to finish school. I would want to change the fortunes of my family. My parents never got an education and hence they were limited on what kinds of work they could access, this would have been my fate had Givedirectly not stepped in. I now know my annual school fees of $250 can easily be covered by my transfers and even if I am in arrears I can get some small support from my parents. Though they do not earn much, both of my parents challenge me to continue in my education so as I can raise the living standard of my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My life has been made of ease since I began receiving cash from Givedirectly. I am a student in senior high school, form 3. I have paid for my school fees using the transfers since I began receiving them. My Parents have been struggling financially as a result of lack of proper income sources and this had created a strain in their ability to provide for the three of us yet in school. I save my transfers from the month of November to January and cleared a school fees debt of $40 that I had accumulated last year and then used the rest of the cash, $62 to start paying this years school fees. My school fees is yet to be completed as I still am in arrears of $60 for the first term. I am however not very stressed since this is what my February transfers and March transfers will cater for.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My primary goal is to successfully complete my high school education without any outstanding school fees balances. As I enter my second year of high school, I am determined to utilize any available resources, including transfers or financial assistance, to clear any remaining dues and ensure that by the time I graduate, I am debt-free to the school. I therefore plan to save a portion of these transfers to cover the costs of the remaining school fee terms, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted educational journey towards my future aspirations.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The GiveDirectly money I received arrived at a crucial moment in my life when I was grappling with severe financial strain. At that time, I had accumulated a school balance of $180, and I was uncertain about how I could possibly settle it. However, GiveDirectly provided a lifeline. With the transfers I received, I was able to alleviate a significant portion of my academic burden by paying off $30 of my school fees. Additionally, I invested $2 in acquiring much-needed educational materials, as my previous books were filled with notes and wear. Moreover, the remaining $2.70 from the assistance proved invaluable for my daily sustenance, primarily in procuring food. The support from GiveDirectly has been a lifeline during a challenging time, and I am eternally grateful for their assistance.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am the fourth of six children with a mother who is a farmer and a father who is hired to herd cattle and he is the primary breadwinner. I also have older siblings who live in the city trying to make something of themselves. my oldest brother is responsible for our school fees payments as what my parents earn is not enough to take care of schooling. I hope to continue using my transfers on school hopefully until I can clear school. I believe this will allow me to focus without distractions on missing out on school so much and I will be able to make something of my self once I finish school and get a good grade.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a student currently in a day school around our local area. I was joining high school when Givedirectly came into our area. I decided to spent this transfers to ensure I went through school. My monthly expenditure of the Givedirectly transfers includes a spending of $30 monthly on school fees. I usually spend the remaining $4 on different needs depending on how my month is. I spent the $4 in March on books, in April I spent it on buying flour as well as in May so I could not run out of food.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have aspired to pursue academic excellence. This goal seemed too hard to achieve before I was enrolled in GiveDirectly's program owing to the poor financial state of my parents. Now that I am sure of my monthly transfers, I shall always strive to use my transfers to pay my school fees. Therefore, my primary goal is to spend my transfers supporting my studies. I am optimistic that with a success in my academics, I shall be able to realize my full potential.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My parents do not have an alternative source of income, and they depend on burning charcoal for sale. Income from charcoal making is always low to support our educational needs. I am in High School, and I decided to use my transfers for fee payment. With the recent transfer, I spent $10 on buying books since I had insufficient books and other stationeries. I opted to spend $5 to repair my pair of shoes. I spent the rest on paying a portion of my school fees. I am happy with my positive academic progress. The transfers from the preceding months; October, November, and December assisted me in covering some of my tuition fees.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was actually finishing up with my assignments that evening when I noticed the arrival of the money and I can barely describe what I felt but it was pure joy because I really needed the money at the time especially for tuition.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My education is one of the most important things in my life at the moment ,so being able to attend classes even though I have not completely cleared my debt, I am hopeful that eventually it will happen due to the fact that I will keep receiving the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before the arrival of the transfers I had taken some money on loan a couple of weeks back because I needed to pay for my tuition at that moment, so when I received this recent funds I ended up settling the debt I had with an interest of KES 100 so I ended up paying KES 400. Afterwards I took KES 700 of the balance that had remained and also paid for tuition because I was in high school and I had a debt of KES 15,000 which my parents were also struggling to pay reason being I had other siblings who needed looking after as well and they earned minimum wages. Lastly I remained with KES 100 which used on purchasing stationery with.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Good education is my all-time ambition. Raising school fees has always been a problem for my parents because of the number of children they support. I have 4 other siblings who are schooling. My parents are farmers and their income is almost none. Some of my elder siblings had to drop out of school to provide additional financial support for the family. Having a dream of becoming a teacher, I would not wish to be under stress due to lack of school fees, because it can negatively impact my ability to succeed in a school. I want to purchase 10 goats using 20,000 KES of the transfers. Optimistically, the goats will multiply as the years go by. These animals will provide me with the tuition fees through the income I will be making after selling them.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was very excited when I got the calling letter to join secondary school. It had been my biggest dream. I am glad that the journey of becoming a teacher in the future will soon commence.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Raising school to join secondary school is the current challenge I am facing. I was to join school at the beginning of this month but I am yet to because I cannot raise the admission fees. My parents are very poor and they have other 4 siblings to provide for. The required amount is 9,000 KES but my guardians are unable to meet the requirements due to their low income which only caters to food. My parents only depend on farming which earns them very little. It distresses me to see my peers attending school as I miss studies.
