How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
It is hard to plan without any money at hand, though this cannot stop me from having a dream. If I happen to get money someday in the future, I would plan to purchase an additional parcel of land.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
My impression is that the organization's support significantly raised our standard of living. We were previously living in a small house due to financial limitations, therefore it was difficult for me to build a suitable house for my family. I haven't noticed anything that should be corrected.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Working as a tout at the bus stop can be very challenging. This is because the job is unreliable and they are days when I go back home empty-handed. When the organization promised us an unconditional transfer, I knew that this was a golden opportunity for me to change my life into a better one. I, therefore, prioritise building a decent house for my family where I used $400 to realise this dream. The house that I had before was not in a good condition, it was grass-thatched and small. It was extremely difficult for me to construct one before because of my unreliable source of income, and what I earned was hardly enough to cater to the daily needs of my family, which comprises two children and their mother. Secondly, I bought a dairy cow worth $180 so that my children would have enough milk. I am grateful for the support that changed my living status in society.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 1700 Hrs when I received my transfer from GiveDirectly, I felt so happy as I had never received such an amount before. At that moment, I believed that the promise which GiveDirectly had given me during registration had been fulfilled. What made me more excited was that the money is nonrefundable and unconditional. It came at the time when I needed money the most, I was unwell and needed some medication, and receiving transfers relieved me from the financial stress which I had.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Generally, we live below the poverty line and for me to put food on the table I work as a tout and it's not a guaranteed source of income. The earnings from it are enough to buy only a day's meals and nothing much to save. I couldn't afford to raise money for purchasing building materials for constructing a better house. I am glad that now I ha materials that are ready for constructing a new house. Again, after seeking medication, my health has improved and I believe that were it not for these transfers, I couldn't manage to get the best medical care due to lack of finance.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had big plans for the transfers which I had received, first I spent KES 25000 on buying iron sheets, timber, and poles for constructing a new house. I needed a better shelter for my family and that was a priority to me. In the process, my health condition worsen and I had to seek medication. I spent KES 27000 on paying for my medical bills and the rest of KES 3000, I spent on fares to and from the hospital. I can't imagine how things would have been without these transfers. Maybe, I would have opted to sell a small piece of land that I have so that I can raise money for my medication. I am glad that I didn't do that and now I am feeling much better and my piece of land is intact.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am 33 years old and I have been staying alone here. At some point I wanted to marry, but due to inadequate finances it has not been possible. I am past the age of marriage at the moment and my desire is to settle down. Receiving this money is a major boost to me since it will elevate me and make my dream of getting married come to a reality. I am so excited about this, thanks to Give Directly for making me realize this dream. I intend to use to KES 30000 to pay dowry and the rest of money to build another house , an iron roofed one that befits the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Sometimes on February when the schools closed for a long holiday, most people were travelling especially the school children. It was a season where we were making good money, on average I was getting KES 400 per day. And during the holiday too the wage was better. It was the highest moment for me and I enjoyed the times.I had something to smile about and be happy at the end of the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a bus conductor in the nearby Chebunyo market. I earn a meagre income of KES 100 per day, just sufficient to cater for food.My age mates have all married and this is something that bothers me alot. I feel that I have lagged behind and that I should have a family and children. In our community l, a man like me who takes long before getting married is frown upon and despised. It is a sign of poverty and backwardness and it makes me unworthy in the eyes of people. I really long to get out of the situation.
