How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have a new goal of buying a bed and a mattress. I have been sleeping on the bare floor in my house for a very long time. As a result, I have developed health complications, which include back pains and also chest pains over the years. Buying the mattress will ease the health complications I have been having for a while now.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Educating us on how wisely we can use the money was the best thing that Give Directly did to us. The information was helpful and gave us insights on how best we could use the money. I would urge the organization to increase the amount of the transfer because of the many challenges that we are facing in our area.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have lived with my 4 grandchildren in my tiny house for the past 5 years. The house is currently in an awful state. The poles I used to build the house are all rotten, and the house is about to fall down. Because of this, I spent much of the transfer to buy iron sheets, poles and nails to build a bigger and strong house to accommodate all the members of my family (me and 4 grandchildren). I also bought a bed and a mattress to ease my health complications that had risen from sleeping on the bare floor in the house. Besides buying the bed and mattress, I also bought 5 goats. I bought the goats as an investment for the future. This will allow me to accumulate wealth that will help in times of need.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around six in the evening when I was preparing supper for my children when. when my elder son informed me that I had received my first transfer. At first, I thought he was kidding since he is always full of jokes but after checking I confirmed the same. I was extremely happy for I knew that finally, I would own some livestock. Due to the excitement that we all had as a family, we couldn't even afford to eat that evening.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have livestock that I am keeping in my compound. I settle for the goats because they reproduce very fast and take little time to mature Also the pasture is readily available so this is an assurance that I will not have to strain in taking good care of them. Currently, some have started reproducing which makes me believe that I will have many of them in a short period. Being a widow of four children, meeting the family's needs was not easier for me since I do not have a reliable source of income. Therefore my aim is that once the goats multiply, I will start a business of buying and selling the matured offsprings in the local markets and generate income. This will now be the job that I will be depending on since it's very lucrative in my region. From age profits that I will be acquiring, I will be able to settle all my bills in good time and even start some new business as time goes by.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying g some beddings which contains o new wooden bed and a mattress at a total cost of KES 10000. I had to prioritize this because I have been sleeping on the traditional beds which I used to experience lots of discomforts. I later bought some iron sheets, building poles, nails, and the labor charge at a total of KES 20000. I bought all these to construct a new house because the previous one was very small and in critical condition. I also bought five goats at KES 17500 that I am now keeping in my compound. This has been my dream to have them but I could not afford them since I had a lot to cater for. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs got the family that would take us to the next harvesting seasons.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have desired to invest in livestock because it is the only way I can save my money to earn me profit when I sell them after they multiply. I, therefore, intend to start with 10 goats that will cost me KES 30000 of my transfers. I will also spend KES 20000 to buy a new bed and mattress to replace the old ones which do not give me nice sleep, and hence, this will guarantee me a better livelihood. I will further spend KES 40000 to construct a structure for my son. He is mature enough and we can not live in the same structure according to our culture, he has borrowing a place to sleep in the neighborhood and this has not been pleasing me at all. The remaining amount will cater to other household expenses like food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the month of September, my daughter got a job as a house help in Mariakani. This makes me happy because end month she gave me KES 2000 which I spend it on food and I was able to spend the little money I earn from my charcoal work on other household expenses like buying water.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Scarity of water and food has been the biggest challenge that I am currently facing. This is due to the ravaging of drought that we experiencing in our area. I buy 3 jerricans of 20 litres of water per day that cost me KES 50 each. This is very costly for me since I have to buy food every day for my family of 3.
