How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, I will be concentrating on payment of school fees for my children. I have three in secondary school which means I need to put in a lot of effort in order to pay their school fees in time. I do not want a situation that will see my children being sent home for school fees as my desire has always been to see them get the best in terms of education. I look forward to accumulating enough money from the motorcycle work that I do as well as subsistence farming as well.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does very well by their targeting strategy. To me everyone that was in dire need managed to get the cash transfer and for the education that they gave us was equally very helpful in enabling people open up their minds on what they needed to do with the money. I would not ask for better service than the service I got from GiveDirectly field officers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a father of four children with only one child that has completed his secondary school esucation. I also work as a motorcycle operator and this is the only job that allows me to meet the needs of my family comfortably. When I received my second transfer of $550, I used $260 to pay school fees for my children. I also used another $120 to buy goats for keeping. I made a decision to buy goats since I had had to sell some of the goats that I owned to buy a piece of land in the past. It is also an investment that I thought it was worth investing in as it would help me meet the needs of my family in future. I am so much happy for what GiveDirectly has enabled me achieve over this short period of time. I can only look forward to achieving much more going forward.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the when I was at the farm feeding my cow. Then Suddenly I heard my phone ringing, on reaching out to where my phone was, I saw a text message showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly. This was the best news that I had received in a long time, I was full of happiness and joy. I then broke the news to my wife who was equally happy and excited. Since we had planned prior on how we would spend our transfers, It was easy to stick to the budget without any obstacles.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life today is that I was able to purchase a dairy cow. I was not able to acquire it before due to financial constraints. In addition to that, I am glad that I was able to clear school fees arrears for my Son. I am forever grateful for the support that has uplifted our living standards tremendously.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my transfer, I saw the need of purchasing a dairy cow worth KES 30,000 to add to the one that I had before. I was unable to purchase a cow before due to financial constraints. This is because we fully depend on my Boda Boda business for our daily livelihood. I then paid school fees arrears for my child who is at the university where I used KES 25,000. I am so grateful for the support that lifted our living standards amazingly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am single parent struggling with raising school fees for my son who is in Sotik Technical Training Institute. I am a motorbike taxi rider earning KES 300-400 a day and this money is all spent in buying food. My son is at home now because of unpaid arrears amounting to KES 21000 and this is something that is stressing me so much. Receiving this money will enable me clear outstanding fee arrears for my son hence giving him ample time in school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In December last year, my mother offered to pay KES 15000 school fees for my son in order to be allowed to sit for his exams and this made me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge that I face at the moment is being lonely. I lost my wife in the year 2004 and in 2019 death struck my family again when my daughter drowned in a nearby river. This left me with one son who is in school far away from home. Most of the time I am all alone with no one to talk to. I shade tears every time I go through family photos because they evoke pleasant memories of the times we spend together when they were still alive.
