How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have been looking for an alternative source of income in addition to the livestock farming I have been doing because of the enormous strain of paying school fees for my three children. Finding funding to start a new business has been challenging, but it has been a relief when my elder brother, an accountant, agreed to support my new concept to launch a clothing store after we spoke. I am currently finalizing my plans to pick the first stock because I have been doing my research and have determined where to buy from. This would be helpful because I will be moving from market to market and the income will help with household expenses like school tuition.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am happy that I achieved a number of things that would have been challenging to do without the help, even though I had many goals that I could not exhaust with the full transfer that I received. Given that the officer took their time guiding us through the program's course, GiveDirectly's initiative was clear and we did not have to strain to comprehend each stage. We were allowed to spend our money without any restrictions, which made it easier to prioritize and take care of the most urgent problems first. I appreciate the assistance and hope that more villages would follow suit.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My family of five consists of three children who are now enrolled in different schools. I am happy that I have been gaining a sizable amount when my two cows are lactating even since I do not currently have a steady employment that can generate a constant income. I invested $250 on a second cow when I got the second transfer, which significantly boosted the amount of milk we are currently getting. We can now sell at least five liters and perhaps eight liters per day, up from the three liters we were selling everyday, depending on the daily production. Additionally, I spent $100 on foodstuffs that we are currently eating, as well as $100 on clothes for my three children, my spouse, and a pair for myself. I am happy that each member of the family was able to get some new clothing. My wife had to save the remaining money throughout this time because she was not feeling well in order to pay her medical bill when she went for a checkup later.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was startled by a ringtone notification showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was in the field herding then suddenly, I heard my phone ringing, on checking realised that I had received a sum of KES 55,000 from Segovia technology. I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness that I started jumping up and down in joy. I knew that I would be able to renovate my house with the funds. I Then headed home where I summoned my wife and children and then broke the good news. I was so happy and grateful for the support that empowered us financially.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life today is that I was able to renovate my house to a more modern one by putting tiles on the floor. I was unable to achieve this goal before due to financial constraints. In addition to that, I am glad I was able to purchase a sack of maize and other foodstuffs for my family. I am forever grateful for the support that has uplifted our living standards tremendously.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my transfer, I thought of renovating my house into a modern house by putting tiles on the floor. This is because I was unable to do the finishing earlier due to financial constraints since I depend on farming in earning an income and also catering for the needs of my two children. Thus I used KES 30,000 on the renovation work. In addition to that, I bought a bag of maize at KES 5000. Lastly, I bought clothes with the remaining amount of the transfer. I am grateful for the support that changed my living standards in a short time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My current kitchen is not in a fair condition and location. I have been thinking of what I can do to get money for building a new one in a suitable location. Also it has been quite some time since I bought new clothes to my two children and my wife. If I become lucky to receive the transfer, I will prioritize the two mentioned needs. I am grateful for being counted in the second step of Give Directly's exercise.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The recent construction of Sigor - Koitab Silibwet tarmac road gave me hope and strength to think of farm products supplies. I feel energized and grateful to the National Government of Kenya.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently I am financially unstable because I solely depend on my one dairy cow for both subsistence and secondary needs. This season, I did not even manage to prepare my land for planting. I am now worried about how I will feed my family throughout the year.
