How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Immediately I heard that GiveDirectly would enroll some of us in the program, I set a goal of renovating my house. I am glad that currently, the house is in a good condition thus I always happy to be at home. The moment I accomplished this goal, I developed a plan of saving my transfer to help to raise fees for my daughter who is currently in the university. Being able to settle her school fees in advance will help her have ample time for her study thus she will be able to study hard and succeed in her academics.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Taking an initiative to reach out to needy community members is a practice that is more often not taken seriously. However, in my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well in reaching out to the communities that are most poor and ensures that they are enrolled in its program. As a result of this, many community members' lives including myself have greatly been improved. I have been able to accomplish what I could not do at first. However, there is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I separated from my husband, I have been struggling to raise my children single-handedly. Having lived a difficult life as a single mother, I had been unable to buy some key items necessary to make life relatively better. Upon receiving my recent transfer, I prioritize to spend 15,000 KES on purchasing a TV and solar system, thus I can nowadays be able to be updated with the current affairs. As a result of the solar system, my house is always well lit thus when my two children are at home, they always have sufficient lighting for their night studies. Lastly I spent 30,000 KES to pay school fees for my daughter who is currently in a tertiary college. I am glad that she has been able to study well with minimal disruption.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 11 pm. We had just gone to sleep but I was not yet asleep since I am a light sleeper. I heard my phone ringing hence notifying me of a new message. I reached out to my phone to check it. I could not believe it when I saw that the SMS was saying that I had received KES 55000 in my mobile money account. I was so happy on seeing this and I thanked God for the great blessing. I went to sleep knowing that the plans that I had made were now going to be fulfilled.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer brought a very big difference in my life. I was able to achieve the things that I never thought I will be able to achieve since I didn't have the money. I was required to clear the semester fees for my two children, one who is in the university and the other who is in a technical training institute. They were not going to be allowed to sit for their exams without paying the needed money. Other than that, I was able to buy paint which I am going to use in repainting the house that we live in. We can also now watch the television after quite some time since the battery that we had was no longer working well and hence it could not switch on the television.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the transfer money on various things that I didn't have or rather had broken down. I spent KES 26000 on paying college and university fees for my two children. I also bought a solar panel and another battery for it. This cost me more than KES 10000. I also bought three four-litre tins of paint which cost me a total of KES 10500. With the remaining money, I used it in buying a table and two chairs to add to the ones that I had before. I also used some in paying for my medical expenses. I decided to buy another battery for the solar panel because the battery that we had, had spoiled and it could no longer switch on the television. The house that we are living in needs to be repainted and that is why I decided to buy the paints. Payment of the tuition fee for my two children was my main goal upon receiving the transfers since they were not going to be allowed to sit for their exams without clearing the semester fees. I had tried my best to pay the money needed bit by bit but I wasn't able to complete making the payment. I am hence so much glad that I was able to achieve this. We were also able to install the battery and the solar panel and we are now able to watch the television like before. I plan to repaint the house and make other repairs to it upon receiving the next transfer. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for the great help that you have shown me.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was lucky I had a permanent job in the Teacher Service Commission. I am a widow, and I thank God for the job I had since it helped me see my family through. I had decided that once I retired, I would engage in a posho mill business to earn a living. I made sure that I bought the machine and this was my happiness while I was still earning my salary. With little knowledge in business, I put up my structure in the wrong place where few villagers could access it. This has made my business standstill with the money I invested not giving me any returns. After receiving my cash transfer, I am planning to spend KES 50000 to relocate this business along the road. This will be my breakthrough to my retirement happiness. I am certain this will allow the villagers access it thus will be enjoying the returns. I am sure this will help me meet my daily basic needs and reduce the hardship of farming, especially at my old age.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After my retirement, I was left with farming as a source of income. I practice both livestock keeping and crop farming to boost my income. In the last 6 months, livestock has brought joy to my life. My four dairy cows calved down. Though it has been reducing with time, I have enjoyed continuous milk production on my farm. This has ensured me a steady income which helped me pay my children's school fees.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I retired some few years ago and I was happy to come home and relax. I thought I would enjoy my retirement but little did I know that the slashing of my salary would affect me negatively. I currently spend the little I earn to meet my household needs. Currently, paying for school for my two lastborns is my biggest challenge.
