How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am hopeful that very soon I will accomplish the goal of starting a grocery business within the village. I have been jobless for so long which has been affecting my household in so many ways. I trust that once I will acquire the cash and start the business, it will bright a positive impact on my family since I will be able to settle all the bills on time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well by enrolling each household in my entire region. The process was free and fair since all the beneficiaries were all treated equally. Also, the staffs were so generous and approachable, we could ask questions without fear or hesitance. I, therefore, do not see anything that needs to be reviewed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a fraction of my second transfer on buying two goats. I have desired to own them for a long but I couldn't afford to buy any at my cost. This is because of the high levels of poverty that I've been encountering. I hope that once they reproduce and increase in number I will be able to sell one or two and settle my bills without straining. Also, I had to buy building poles, threads, and iron sheets. These were for the competition of my house which was under construction. I am happy that I now shelter in a decent house which is spacious enough to accommodate all my four children. I later paid fees of $60 for my children who are in secondary and primary schools respectively. With the remaining, I bought food for the entire family which took us a month. I have been the laughing stock since I used to borrow food from neighbours and I am grateful that this is now history.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was awakened by the loud vibration from my mobile phone at around 5 AM. I was shocked because it was so strange, I had never received a message at that time of the hour. I request my granddaughter who was already awake, to confirm the contents of the message. Upon checking, he realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. At first, I thought he was kidding but later on, I confirmed that it was true. I felt wow! I couldn't hold my joy. Thereafter I had to inform all my family members and the celebrations kicked off.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is that I now have goats in my compound. I am glad that finally, I managed to fulfill the desires of my heart. This has been my long-time dream to at least have one on my homestead but I could not afford it since I am jobless. Being a widow has been very tough all along because I did not have any assets that I could rely on especially when I experience any challenge. I have been depending on my children for all my needs unfortunately, sometimes they could not afford to provide the meals. This is because they did not have any stable source of income. Therefore having the goats means a lot to me because once they multiply, I will be in a position to sell some and cater to any emergency. Also, I am planning to send all my grandchildren to school once the goats increase in number.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying iron sheets, the iron sheets, nails, and the labor costs at a total of KES 44800. I had intended to construct a new house because the previous one was not in a good state and as time goes by, it would even collapse. The walls were very weak and its roof was very old. During the rainy seasons, we had to sleep at our relative's houses. As a result of the movement, most of my properties were damaged and even stolen. It is now a relief that this will no longer happen again. I later bought one goat at KES 5400 which serves as the living asset that I will always rely on. Additionally, with the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family and decent clothing.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house is just braving the strong wind that we are experiencing in our area. Its roof is very unstable and it can be blown away at any time. I have desired to construct a decent house that can spare me from the danger of this collapsing house but this has been impossible due to financial constraints. Once I receive this money, my top priority is to make my dream come true and this means spending a better portion of my transfers, 60000 KES to offset this plan. This will guarantee me peace of mind because my health will be secured in this new house. Hence, this is basically what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite being alone in my household, my daughter usually comes to check on me. The last time she visited me was in December when she bought me a lot of Christmas gifts including new clothes and a bale of maize flour. In that month, I never got stressed because I could get my daily meals. Thus, I consider this as what has brought joy to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Two years ago, I happened to nurse my grandson who was suffering from atopic dermatitis. Since the ward was full of sick people, I got shocked. In addition, he also succumbed after going through many therapies. All these factors combined directly affected me health-wise and I am currently suffering from high blood pressure. This condition has made me less productive because whenever I encounter a stressful situation, I get sick. Thus, this is what I am currently facing as a challenge in my life.
