How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different from how it used to be in the past because I have been ab;e to purchase the three-wheeler machine which generates money for the family. I also managed to offset the huge school fees arrears for my child which had become such a stumbling block towards his advancement in his education ladder.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I believe that the organization has changed our lives to a great extent. I used to operate a small scale business which was almost collapsing due to lack of enough funds to run the business, but today I have been able to move from one step to the next because I have been able to add more stock which in turn generates more cash on a day to day basis.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used the money to buy a three-wheeler machine which my husband has so far been using to ferry passengers at a fee in Mombasa city. The machine has kept us going because my husband is able to generate some income on a daily basis which we then use to cater to the family's

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that it was only through the first transfer that enabled me to buy diverse products and stock to add to my business. I am now glad since my profit margin has increased as compared to what I was previously earning. This has enabled me to meet all my family basic needs and to pay my children's school fees on time. I give all thanks to GiveDirectly for financial support.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My phone was off and was charging at the time I was hearing rumors from my neighbors that GiveDirectly has sent us the money they had promised. I went for it and turned it on and amazingly, the first message was from them indicating that I had received my first transfer. I was very happy than before as I tried to figure out what I would spend my transfer on.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I am a businesswoman and I have a shop and grocery in my town from which I was only selling only one kind of vegetables and the stock in my shop was not enough to earn me a good profit since I did not have diversified products. When I received the transfer, I used part of it to stock different types of products that are marketable like second-hand clothes and added to my grocery business other types of vegetables and fruits. There is a great improvement in terms of the profit that I am currently earning as compared to what I was previously earning. It was only through the transfer that enabled me to diversify my business to earn an increase in the profit margin. In addition to my business, I also bought a dairy cow to keep it until its able to reproduce and to get milk from it. This will relieve me the burden of buying milk daily from others which to me is costly. On the remaining amount, I paid a portion of my child's school fees and also purchased some utensils for my home since I did not have enough.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My grocery business has not been making profit hence, I intend to expand and invest in it so that I can turn it into a shop where people in Mariango centre can get all the items they need such as flour and cooking oil. This means that I will be able to get much more profit and at the same time be able to support my husband who does motorcycle transport.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My day begins at 6 am in the morning after completing the household chores and I arrive at my business premise to sell groceries to the residents of Mariango village and its environs. This is the happiest part of my day due to the fact that we still do not have many groceries in our area and the locals prefer to get supply of vegetables from my shop.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My income is very low and this has adversely affected my children's education as most of the times they keep on being sent home for school fees. At times they spend an entire month at home as I try to collect the little cash I get from my business in order to settle their school fees.
