How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to build a chicken house and to place a wire mesh all around our compound to restrain the chickens from going to other people's farms and destroying crops. I want to do so because I have a plan to buy more chickens and rear them. I have ten of them and I have seen how beneficial they are. I usually sell the eggs and the money that I get I usually use in buying small household items such as salt, soap, and tea leaves. I want to rear more chickens because I am planning to hatch chicks and be selling them to get more money that will enable me to pay school fees for my three children comfortably.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly staff were organized in how they conducted their work. They taught us well in the meeting that they held with the community members before starting the enrollment process. They advised us to make some investment with the transfer so that we can have something that will bring us income in the future. I saw this advice as good and helpful. Everything went well and hence I do not see anything wrong with how they conducted their work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 40000 of our recent transfer on building another house that is roofed with iron sheets. We only had one grass-thatched house. There was nowhere to welcome guests and the environment in the house was not conducive because this is also the place where we prepare our meals, hence too much smoke. We had always wanted to build another house that will be the main house but we were not able to because we didn't have the money. My wife and I usually depend on casual jobs to earn a living. We have an agreement that the money that she makes, we use it for buying food while the one that I make, I usually save it and we use it in paying school fees for the children. We have two children in secondary school and one who is in primary school. We are happy that GiveDirectly enabled us to achieve this dream and hence we now have a good house that we can welcome guests to. We now also sleep well at night because the house is free from smoke. With the remaining transfer money, we used it in paying school fees for our two children in secondary school. We managed to clear the arrears and hence they were able to study well without being interrupted. This is all thanks to GiveDirectly for their support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 11:38 pm and my family had retired to bed. I heard my phone ring and on checking it I was impressed that we had finally received the much awaited cash from GiveDirectly. I could not believe my eyes. I shared the information with my wife and children who were so grateful a en well. The thought of having the ability to purchase livestock of my own and paying school fees in full really made me happy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is that I am more at peace with everyone ND with self. Having paid school fees and the livestock that I bought have brought a lot of difference in my life. I feel that I have been boosted a lot and my life will not be the same as it were before I received these transfers. I am so happy that I was one of the beneficiaries.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 35000 to buy livestock that I now keep. All along I had wanted to buy one of my own but the casua work that I relied on was hardly enough to meet our daily needs and at the same time save. I could only wait for an opportune time like this to be able to get money for such investments. I used the remaining amount to pay school fees for my two children who are in various schools. I am glad that I was able to pay school fees in full for the first time and this time round my children will be in school all year round.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a new beginning for me. For a long time, I have relied on menial jobs for my family's survival. This has not been easy because I can only make about KES 200 per day at the most. With this money, I will buy a bicycle and start a small business, trading in chicken. I will use the bicycle to transport them to various markets. I will spend about KES 40,000 on this. I will then build a good house with KES 30,000 to replace this old mud hut, which is quite small for my now big family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
About three months ago, I borrowed a cow from a friend of my mine. Rearing this cow is a source of hope that, 2 months down the line, I will be having a constant source of income from selling its milk. It brought us joy as a family to have a cow in the compound for the first time ever! Even though it does not belong to me, I will take good care of it so that I can earn about KES 150 per day from selling milk and use this to meet the household's needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food shortage in my household is the biggest challenge that I currently face. My farm of about a tenth of an acre is only enough to live on but not to produce food. The only income source has been menial jobs. This too is unreliable, exposing us to famine most of the time. I will sort this out once I start a small business with your help.
