How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Immediately after I received my transfer, I first prioritized paying off the school fee arrears for my children. I am glad that at last, I got relief. I am not worried about school fees for the rest of this year. Since I did not have a reliable source of income, I later developed a goal of starting a business dealing by selling food at my nearby market center. To start up this business, I invested KES 10,000, and the business is currently progressing well. Indeed, I have witnessed an improvement in my life since I can raise at least KES 200 daily. Proceeds from the said venture greatly help me to support my family without begging.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my observation, GiveDirectly does well in promoting the well-being and living standards of the community members. It succeeds in this by giving the recipients unconditional cash transfers that we can use to acquire items we could not obtain at first. For instance, when I received the transfer, I was financially constrained. I did not know how I would raise fees for my children. However, just like other beneficiaries who had different priorities, I was at; liberty to pay off the fee arrears. In my opinion, there is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the recent transfer, my children were back at home because they had fee arrears. I therefore opted to use KES 40,000 off set the fee balance. I spent KES 25,000 on paying fee for a son who is current in form four while KES 15,000 catered for the fees for the other children in primary school. From then, they have not missed school even for a day except for days they have been on short school holidays. The rest of the transfers helped me in starting up a business as well as medication fee for my youngest child, 3 years old who has been suffering from Sickle Cell Anemia. With the business, I have witnessed a great improvement in my life.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was so much excited the moment, I received the transfer from Give directly. Since my grocery business has just collapsed and it was the only source of income I'm depending on . Life was not easy anymore since my kids heard about pending school fees arrears and also heard about a lot of debts from the nearby shops, give directly renewed my lost hope, and I even budgeted for the money immediately withdrawing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life has really changed. Since grocery business has stabilized and my kids will be going to back to school like the rest joyfully without any problem because their school fees have cleared. As a parent I'm now a leaving a stress free life because school fees for kids were a big burden to me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Education is the only way to change someone's life, As an educated parent, I have decided to invest in my kid's education because I don't want them to suffer the way I'm suffering doing odd jobs. So the moment I received the transfer I spend a lot of in their school fees, for instance, my daughter who is in High School heard a pending school fees arrears of ksh 32000. Out of the ksh 55000, I received from Give directly I spend ksh 32000 to clear her school fees. I also have my son who is in grade eight and he also heard a pending school fees balance of ksh 8000 I as well cleared his school fees. Out of the remaining ksh 15000, I paid another ksh 2000 for my kids who are in the lower level school fees, and for the remaining balance, I added more stock to my grocery business as well clearing the pending bill at the neighboring shop. Iam is so much grateful to give directions for the good work they do in changing people's lives. If it were not for you people my kids could have dropped out of school due to a lack of school fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I had a grocery business which failed 1 year ago due to the burden of responsibilities of raising 7 kids and my husband who works as a security personnel earns peanuts which is not enough to cater for the family needs. Receiving this money would mean I set aside 8000 KES for buying vegetables and fruits stock for the business. Through this I believe it will help my family in catering some of the basic needs such as food and school fees for my children in school. I will also spend 20000 KES to pay school fees for the kids for the whole year which I believe it will help them concentrate on their studies and eventually perform well.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was employed at a quarry site last year, earning 400 KES a day which was enough for me to buy food for my family while my husband was taking care of the other needs such as school fees. I used to feel great though the contract ended two months ago rendering me jobless but during that time we had no much challenges as a family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of enough food for the family is giving me sleepless nights as my children sometimes go to bed hungry which affects them even at school making them not to concentrate and this makes them not to perform well in their academics. We rarely afford three meals a day.
