How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I used the first transfer to buy a piece of land, we stay on my mother's land and I would like to move out and build my own house for my family. Two of my daughters are getting married soon and I am planning to use the dowry money to start construction.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Providing us with a toll-free number that we can call whenever we have an issue with the program has been helpful. Whenever I call I am received with respect and they listen to me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been selling traditional alcohol since I was thirty years old. I buy a liter at $1 and sell it at $1.3. In a month I would sell thirty liters and spend the profit for food. With seven children the money is not enough to cater for their expenses such as school fees. School fees have been a challenge and most time my children are sent away which makes them miss a lot of schoolwork. Receiving this money has enabled me to buy a mattress I recently gave birth and my back was in a lot of pain because of sleeping on old clothes, paid medical expenses for the birth of my son, and paid school fees for my children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As I was doing some house chores, I had an alert message. Since I couldn't read, I took the phone to my brother so he could tell me the content of the message. He was the one that informed me that give directly had sent my transfer. I was very grateful. For a very long time, I have had the need to buy a piece of land but I did not have the means to facilitate it. Now, the organization has granted me an opportunity to fulfill this.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The greatest difference I have seen in my life ever since I started receiving these funds from give directly, is the fact that I now own land which my sons will Inherit, and this has given me some sort of pride. something I never had all this time when I was living in my parents' compound. I also have plans to buy some livestock using my next transfer as they will act as my financial security.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother of 7 children, four girls, and three boys. One of my daughters, who is 18 years old, is married. So, under my care, I have six children. Another one of my other daughters and son dropped out in class 4 and Class 3 respectively.  This is because my job as a traditional wine vendor, earned me barely enough to fend for all their needs, and for this reason, I was unable to raise funds to pay their school fees. The other four are I still too young to start school. When I got the funds from give directly, to secure the inheritance of my three sons, I bought one acre of land at KES 40000. Presently, we live in my parents' compound. Whatever amount I remained with I used to buy a mat made from dried palm tree leaves that my visitors would be sitting on, a water tank to help curb the water problem in my village. Finally, I bought some nourishment for my children and I.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will make me realize my dream of owning a place of land. I have been separated from my husband for over one year now. This has forced me to come back to my maternal home with my six children. According to our culture, a woman cannot inherit land from her parents. I am living with fear because I might be forced to move out of this land with my kids at any time. I now plan to buy a one-acre piece of land that will cost me KES 45000 and then build a two-bedroom house at a cost of KES 50000. This will not only give me a place to call my own but will also grant me peace of mind.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last week, I secured a casual job on a construction site for one day. This brought happiness to my life because I earned KES 600 that single day. I used the money to renovate my house which was leaking by then.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
It's now over one year since I separated with my husband. Raising my six children single-handedly is very tough for me. My biggest challenge currently is providing food for them and paying their school fees. I depend on palm wine vending. This job earns me as little as KES 200- 300 per day which is very little to sustain all the family's needs. My children have now dropped out of school due to lack of school fees.
