How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it was before Give Directly came into my life because I could not have managed to start a business. I had been selling charcoal which was hectic because one has to do a lot of work but get less money. The transfers enabled me to open a shop which is more profitable as compared to the charcoal selling business. I was also able to pay school fees for my child for the whole term. I am now certain that my child will stay in school without being sent home which was impossible before. The great joy of owning the three goats is something that I did know I will experience any time soon. I just thank GiveDirectly for the help that I received because my life is no longer the same.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly gives out unconditional cash transfer which has enabled most of the people to meet they longed awaited goals. I realized that my community members are not brain dead. It's only that they did not have the means to improve their lives. They have good ideas some which will generate income forever. The living standards of people in this village has greatly improved because of the help we got from this organization.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on building a house. I had been staying in a small one which was leaking because it was built several years back and the roof had become old. My family had to squeeze in that small room since I did not have the means to build another one. I am glad that GiveDirectly came into my life and enabled me to build another one. The current one is spacious and there is a bit of privacy. I sleep in my own room and the children also enjoy sleeping in their room. Apart from that, I also bought three goats. The goats will help me in the future. I will be selling the offsprings in order to take care of emergencies. I also paid school fees for my child who had been sent home due to fee arrears. I had been waiting to at least get profits from my business so as to pay the fees but it was not enough. That would make my child stay longer at home because making profits from the charcoal business was difficult. I thank Give Directly very much because they helped me in a very big way.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The transfer has brought a change into my life that I will live to remember. Living in a house that was small and old was not comfortable with me and the desire to own a house constantly bothered me and there was nothing I could do about it. Its when GiveDirectly came to our village and through their transfer that I am almost finishing my new two-roomed house. To me, this is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The transfer came at a time when I was in real distress now that I had a family and my house was too small for all of us. That morning I was on my house chores and I received a message notification. On checking to confirm, It was from GiveDirectly that I had received the transfer that I had anxiously waited for. The thought that I would soon build a new and spacious house brought happiness and peace again, no more distress.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
The house that I was sheltering in previously was an old small one that was not spacious enough to even accommodate my family. I often felt so low whenever I had visitors coming since I knew that this was going to be another moment of shame in my life. I wished that someday I would build a more spacious house. However, money was the biggest constraint to this. On receiving this transfer, it was a perfect opportunity for me to actualize my dream of having a new house. I spent part of my first transfer on buying Iron sheets and enough building materials for the construction of a new two-roomed house. I am happy that very soon it will be ready and I will be moving into the new house with my family. I also bought three goats to keep and I am hoping that they will reproduce and increase in number and that I will be having something to lean on in case of any financial crisis. Part of the remaining transfer was used to buy food and other basic household necessities. I greatly appreciate the support I got from GiveDirectly.
