How is your life currently different from how it was four months ago?
Before I received the transfers, I only had one old and low-density mattress that had been used for several years. However, with the transfers from GiveDirectly, I succeeded to buy a brand new and high-density mattress. Currently, my life is different than it was before in that I am always able to sleep comfortably. Moreover, by settling the fee arrears for my grandchild, I feel more relieved and happy. Indeed my life is now better than it was before.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life for the next four months?
In the next four months, my additional goal is to look for some money and use them to furnish my business premise. I am planning to start using it by the end of this month although its floor has not been cemented. In addition, I am planning to restock my business thus I shall be able to generate more profit from the various products be selling.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life in the last four months preceding the current transfer.
In the last four months, the biggest difference in my life is owning a new business premise. For several years, I had been desiring to build a premise where I can do my business without renting out any premise. When I received my transfers, I prioritized constructing a small permanent house which is near completion. I feel life is better because I have it and I shall soon start using it for my business errands. Through this, I shall save a lot of money for my own use which would have otherwise gone to paying business premise rent.
How do you expect your life to change in the next six months?
In in the next six months, I expect my business to expand because I shall always re-invest part of the profits generated from the business. This will be possible because I shall no longer be required to pay any money for rent. Since the new business premise is located in the nearby center, I shall easily manage it because there will be no long distance to cover.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is conflict over land. I bought the piece of land that I live on from a neighbour who later sold the same piece of land to another person without our knowledge. We have had a long court case proceedings over the issue but no solution found. We face the challenge of being evicted from here or attacked. This has been so hard for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I have closed my business, made profits and bought some food to prepare for the family. It is my highest moment getting together with family members when we are all from work.
What are you planning to spend your transfer on?
I plan to spend my transfer to improve my small business. I do cereals business but it is my desire to put alongside it a posho mill so that customers who buy cereals from me do as also have them ground. This will increase my profits as I already have a ready market. I see my source of income broaden thus improved living conditions.
What is the achievement you are proudest of?
The achievement I would be proudest of is educating my children. From small business that I do, I paid their school fees, fed them and took care of their needs. Currently, they are working and I feel proud of my impact on their lives.
