How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
This year, my goal was to focus on expanding my business so that it can earn me a sustainable income to support my husband and children's school fees. I'm also focusing on farming so that I can get enough food for domestic consumption. Achieving both means financial independence and improving the living standards of my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Although the transfers are unconditional, what GiveDirectly does well is giving us the recipients advisory on what can be helpful for us and many people follow this advisory to make sure they spend the transfers well and that they have fully benefited from the transfers. What GiveDirectly needs to improve on is including youth who does who are independent even though they don't have families. Some haven't married because of though economic impact and they feel sad when left out of the program.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I got married to my husband, we were both in collage and we believed that we had a bright future ahead of us. Since both of us come from a very humble backgrounds, my parents somehow managed to pay my school fees until I graduated but unfortunate, my husband had to drop out of school at some point due to lack of school fees. When I graduated, I was very hopeful that I will get a job to support my husband go back to school but a couple of years later today with two children, I haven't managed to find a job. When we receive our first transfer, my husband was able to go back to school and we are grateful to GiveDirectly for that. I spend $417 to open a second hand clothes boutique and the balance to buy iron sheets that we used to roof a two bedroom muddy house that we had built. With this business I will be able to pay my husband's college fees and school fees for my children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I can remember it vividly like yesterday. It was around 5pm, I was just at home relaxing when I heard a message notification from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes. It was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I informed my family members and everyone celebrated with joy. This was the happiest news we have ever had. I knew I would be able to invest on livestock keeping. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a A heifer and an ox. This is the best investment that I wanted to do but I did not have the money. I depend on small scale farming and grocery business. This earns me small income and I was not in a position to purchase a dairy cow. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I decided to invest on this project. I will be in a position to get enough milk for the family and cut the cost of buying milk. I will sell the ox and purchase a heifer. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled me to fulfilled my dream. I have devoted much of my time on this dairy keeping project. I know this will he my main source of income because I will sell the milk to earn an income. I am so grateful for the support from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 8,000 on purchasing a wire mesh and fence my compound. This would prevent my chicken from destroying my crops. I spent KES 41,000 on purchasing a heifer and an ox. This is the best investment that I have always wished to own. I am so grateful because I will get enough milk when my cow reproduce in the next few months. I spent KES 3,000 on adding stock to my small business of groceries. The rest of the money I spent on food and clothes for my children I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us to fulfilled our dreams.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My first goal is to renovate the house we live in so that it can be decent. I am planning to change the wall of the house to timber since it is made of mud and it is weak and indecent I will spend the first transfer to buy building materials and for Labor. I will be excited once I see my long-awaited dream become true. This is because I have constantly thought that my house might fall when the long heavy rain starts.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I received money from the merry-go-rounds we have been having with other women in the village. I received KES 3000, I managed to start poultry farming with KES 2000, and with the remaining KES 1000, I bought food for the family. This has brought so much happiness to me because I can now comfortably run my small poultry farm.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have always dreamt of being a dairy farmer but we have a small land of 0.3acres which we inherited from our parents. This is small and it can not accommodate dairy farming since it requires big land. This has been a challenge for us as a family, I plan on buying 0.5acres when I receive Give Directly money.
