How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to plant boma Rhodes on the piece of land that I have already tilled. I plan to plant and sell them so that I can get more income. I just do not have the money for buying the boma Rhodes seeds and for paying for the labor costs of planting. I also have a plan to buy one more cow to add to the ones that I have. I usually sell some of the milk from my cows, and hence buying the cow will mean more milk for sale and more income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly staff were very effective and efficient. They did not waste time when they were conducting their work. They came and they purposely did what they had intended to do. They also ensured that they went to every household that had been written down in the meeting and everyone who was enrolled got the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my entire recent transfer on hiring 10 acres of land and tilling it. I hired it for KES 30000. I also spent another KES 30000 on tilling the piece of land. I plan to plant boma Rhodes on it and sell them when they will be ready so that I can get more income. I am a farmer and I have been planting boma Rhodes on 2 acres of my land for my cows and I usually sell some. I have thus seen this farming as a good agribusiness venture. Other than planting boma Rhodes, I also usually plant crops such as cabbages and beans and sell them. I also have cows and I usually sell some of the milk to make money. The money that I make from the sales is what usually helps me in buying food and clothes for myself since I no longer have children in school. With the remaining transfer money, I used it in buying food. I still had some money saved from the first transfer which I hence added to the second transfer. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your support.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 4pm while from a prayer meeting when I alighted from my motorcycle when I checked my phone and saw two new messages. On checking them out, one was KES55000 from GiveDirectly and I couldn't be happier. Immediately I looked for a tractor in order to plant maize the next day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is relief from financial stress because with GiveDirectly transfers I have adequate food as compared to before when I used to rely on my kids and my only dairy cow. I am also grateful for the heifer I bought because it is a future investment and I have also started saving money from dairy farmingand merry go round contribution which I intended to buy a dairy cow with.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES20000 on heifer as an additional milk source to the one I had. I spent KES 10,000 on maize and beans farming because I had prepared land but did not have capital for purchase of seeds. I spent KES 7000 on food and household items and KES6000 on fifteen chicken layers. Initially, I used to rely on dairy farming and my kids who are working to buy farm inputs and food as well.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means financial stability to my family. I have always wanted to add a dairy cow besides the one I currently have but the finances could not allow me to. Previously, I made liquid soap for sale but this business failed in 2019 when I fell sick and used the profit for my treatment. Being a single lady moreso, a breadwinner to my family of 3, I resorted to selling milk to the milk vendors to earn income as I normally sell 4 litres daily at KES 35 a litre. I intend to use KES 40000 to make this dream come through and therefore my family will have sufficient food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being a single mother of 3, I have always wished for the prosperity of my children. My children came visiting 2 weeks ago for 4 days after being away for 5months. I was happy because I had time to catch up with my grandchildren as we reminiscences about the good old days together.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I developed a nerve problem in 2019 that paralysed my right eye thus taking it 18 months to heal. Although I was done with my check-ups in 2020, my immune system has since not regained fully. Hence I cannot currently execute multiple chores like before and this makes me sad.
