How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am great full to Give Directly for the support. It came in handy when I needed it most. Through the transfers, I was able to meet most of the pressing needs including purchasing a motorcycle which has assured me of a stable source of income. At the moment, I do not have any new goals.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly did a great job in our village and it is highly appreciated for the fairness that we experienced from the start of the program to the end. Everyone was given a chance to raise concerns which were all responded to and later people received equal mounts. I have no complaint since so far, everything happened as was promised by Give Directly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am the main income earner in our household but it has not been easy meeting my family's needs. I have been relying on people's motorcycles for a commission at the end of the day but due to the size of my family, whatever I earned was not enough to meet our needs. When I received the second transfer I paid 15000 KES for a deposit on a motorcycle which I bought on credit. I will be using it for taxi services. The income from it will enable me to comfortably meet my household's needs and also pay 2066 KES weekly for a year to service the credit I owe the company. 7600 KES I spent on two bags of corn which is enough to push my family for a while. Out of the remaining 31700 KES, I bought both a goat and a duck for rearing at 3700 KES. They are a good form of investment since in the future after they will have given birth then I will have more of them that I can easily sell to meet other household bills. I have saved 28000 KES for daily household usage and other expenses that might arise.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I felt so happy since that was the very first I was receiving such a huge financial assistance. The transfer were sent late in the evening at 6.00 pm. At that time, I was just sitting at a friends place and we were thinking on what we could do to better our living standard. When I noticed that the transfer had come, I first went to buy some food because I did not have any in the house. From then my life has positively changed. Thanks to GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life since I began receiving my transfer is owning a goat and a sunking solar. Owning a goat is a sign of wealth in my village and from the flock, I shall be able to begin keeping cows. Consequently, having clearing paying for my solar, I find it easy to charge my phones. I also do not incur any cost in buying kerosene since the solar lighting is sufficient for my household. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfers on a number of items. First and foremost I bought a goat worth KES 3,500 since I had been longing to own at least one. In addition, I spent KES 5,000 to clear paying for a sunking solar. I had previously bought it on credit but later on failed to clear paying it because I did not have steady cash flow. From the solar system, we are always able to charge our phones. It also provides us with sufficient light hence my children do not struggle to study at night. Lastly, I spent KES 3,000 on buying new clothes because the previous ones were very old. I am happy that currently I am very presentable.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means opening a kiosk in my village. In this area, shops are 5km away something that have created a business opportunity. With a capital of 50000KES, I will be able to open the kiosk which am very sure will have created an employment for me and a source of income for my household. My wife has very perfect skills in making donuts, so in that kiosk we will use that as a way of attracting customers and increase the income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In June, one of my best friend really impressed me. He is a hustler like me but he got funds from a certain microfinance bank and started a shop. If I look at him now, he has developed so much something that really inspires me and motivate me. Whenever I encounter challenges, he is my source of hope and joy because I believe one day I will find my opportunity and fulfill my dream.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My current challenge is inability to get a baby. I married this beautiful woman 3 years ago. Ever since we got married, we have been unable to get baby and the reason from the doctor is that my wife has a problem with her womb. This situation has lowered my value, dignity and respect from my brothers and friends to an extent some suggesting am impotent or I divorce my wife. Honestly, I really love my wife and I promise to do anything possible to make sure we are blessed with a child.
