How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My plan is to invest more and expand in livestock. I have been fortunate to reap numerous benefits, such as abundant milk production, which yields profitable returns when sold. I am immensely grateful to GiveDirectly for their invaluable assistance in helping me achieve this level of success
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is doing a remarkable job as they fulfill their promises without expecting any favors in return. I am truly grateful for their dedication and commitment.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I typically invest in goats, so when I received money from GiveDirectly, I purchased five goats at a cost of $20. I specifically chose business goats as they usually generate a profit. With the remaining $20, I enhanced my farm by adding more maize flour. Additionally, I used a portion of the funds to buy food for my children.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After struggling to provide enough food for my family for a long time, I was relieved when I received the money from GiveDirectly because it enabled me to lease a piece of land that I plan to continue farming on in the coming years and beyond. In our community, farming is one of the main economic activities, and I intend to focus more on it to ensure a continuous supply of food for my family of three. With no significant bills to pay at the moment since our child is not yet in school, I can save a lot for future farm operations by leasing more fertile land. The current projects on my farm are promising, and I am hopeful that they will yield good returns.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Providing unconditional cash transfers was a brilliant initiative as it gave people the freedom to address a range of their needs. I have witnessed a considerable transformation in our village with many students who had previously dropped out of school returning to classes. Some households opted to invest in livestock, while others ventured into subsistence farming. As a result, the village is now thriving and more harmonious. Furthermore, everyone seems to be lauding the organization, and I haven't come across any complaints so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the second transfer from GiveDirectly, I had several plans that I wished to accomplish before using up the whole amount. First, I restocked our food supplies by purchasing 50 kilograms of dry maize grains for $30 to sustain my family of three. Additionally, I invested $200 in purchasing four goats, which I plan to breed and sell in the future to fund new projects. Our community has vast land with shrubs and herbs that are suitable for goat farming. I also bought new clothes worth $20 for my spouse and our eldest child. Due to the shortage of animal feed, I decided to lease a plot of land close to the water point for farming purposes. Since the plot will require irrigation, I paid a leasehold fee of $100 and am currently preparing the land to plant maize. I sent the remaining $100 to my mother, who also required support in land preparation and planting. This will enable her to set up her land and buy seeds, which will boost her financial stability and reduce her reliance on other siblings who have been assisting her.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My phone rang as I was watering fruits and tomatoes at my place of employment. Typically, I don't check my text messages, but since I had been assured I would get some cash transfer, I got accustomed to being attentive to checking my phone. I paused to read the text only to discover that GiveDirectly had sent me some money. This was the happiest day of my life. I was overwhelmed with joy. I told my wife soon as I got home and she was equally excited with joy. We embarked on planning how we would best utilize the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has significantly changed my life, for the better. It's made me incredibly happy. This is because I recently purchased a mattress that allows us to sleep comfortably instead of on the floor as we did in the past. I have hopes for the future as I have to broaden my future. I was also able to stock enough food to meet our needs. The fact is neither I nor my family will go hungry makes me happy and I'm thankful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My wife and I agreed on how best to utilize the transfer upon receipt. We first planned on using $25 on the purchase of decent bedding. Another $25 was spent on utensils and plastic seats while the remaining was spent on food and clothing. I earn an income through casual jobs whereas my wife stays at home. We are blessed with one child and expecting another. Being able to accomplish a lot in such a short period, especially with my meager income, makes me relieved. My primary care was on how to feed my family. I'm happy to say this has been possible to meet from the transfer of cash received.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Working as a casual for someone else for close to ten years is what I would like to change. This is only possible if I self-employ myself by starting up a livestock keeping business. I have not been able to save any money or even invest on anything as the money I earn is only enough to purchase food for my family of three. I will use the transfers to purchase fifteen goats at a cost of KES 45,000. Since it can calf twice in a year, I will make good profits in two years time. At thesame time ,I will purchase other ten goats for resale at a higher rice. I am so happy because with Givedirectly I will be able to achieve my dreams and provide for my family without strain.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the last six months, I have lived independently providing for my wife and son without strain. As a father and husband I am proud of myself when I see my family not lacking their basic needs. I do casual jobs at people's farms and even though it's not reliable what I earn in a day can purchase two days meal. I am thankful to God for not lacking food and this has brought me happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a stable job makes life difficult. I used to work as a farm-hand in the neighbouring village until two months ago when I lost the job. Life has not been thesame because I rely on casual jobs to make ends meet. In a week I can work for only three days due to scarcity of work which is little money compared to when I earned a monthly salary. Secondly, we were chased out of the house we used to live and this forced me to borrow a one for the safety and comfort of my family. This worries me alot because I am not able to give my son a good life.
