In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Being unemployed and depending on my wife for support, has its challenges. In that, I never used to have money to help with the payments of bills. Now with this transfer, I can also make my contribution when it comes to bill payments. To give great support, give directly should also consider the spouses who are working away from the village but frequently come home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have three children in class 6 and one in kindergarten. The ones in primary have school fee areas of KES7360. Using my second transfer, I reduced the bill to KES6200. Since the one in kindergarten had no arrears, I bought him some school uniforms instead. Where I spent KES600. Using KES460, I bought four packets of maize flour, and the remaining KES780 I used on the food budget. As for the first transfer, I only used KES300 to purchase food for my family. This is because when I took my phone to charge it, the shop owner accidentally switched phones and gave mine to someone else who had blocked it. I contacted Safaricom for some assistance but instead, they referred me to their offices in mariakani. The cost of transport was KES900. This inconvenienced me since I had plans of paying for my children's school fee arrears. Now that I am unemployed, I am forced to depend on my wife, who is a business lady, for support

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had never been happy in my life like I did when I received my first transfer. Before I received the transfer I was very sad because I knew I had a debt to settle. However this became easy when I received the transfer. All my life I had never receive any unconditional transfer from any Non-governmental organization. Thanks to GiveDirectly I was able to receive the transfers. I paid my Children school fees arrairs and brought some food for the family. I was ecstatic upon receiving my transfers. The transfers really elated me since I knew my worse situations would be over sooner.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
There is a great improvement in my life after receiving my first transfer. My life was uneasy before I received my transfers. Being jobless in a pandemic of the Coronavirus, made life kind of stormy to me. I believe my family would continue to get food sustainance in the near future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had just received a new phone from GiveDirectly. I took it to be charged in a nearby shop. It happens that the shopkeeper had given out my phone to someone else by mistake. This is because a number recipients had received similar phone from GiveDirectly. At the point I was realizing that the phone was not mine it was too late. The person who was given my phone by mistake had already blocked my sim card because he had exceeded the number of attempted pin entry. This calls for an additional expense since I had to travel to the nearest safaricom shop for line replacement as it was beyond calling safaricom hotline number 100. I borrowed my friend KES 850 for the transportation cost which I refunded using the transfer I got from GiveDirectly. The remaining KES 250 I was able to buy food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I work as a charcoal vendor a job that is currently facing financial challenges and its income has not been good. The profit I usually get from this business which is normally 300 per day is all spent on food and I can not save anything for the future. With the help from GiveDirectly, I am planning to improve my business by adding my capital with 1500 KES every month for at least 5 months. This will mean more profit and hence, a better livelihood. On the other hand, this money will help me to buy food for the family and also to support my 4 children's education. Thus, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the past 6 months, I have enjoyed good health together with my family since no one has complained of sickness. This makes me feel grateful and hence, it is what has brought joy to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The financial crisis is the current challenge that I am facing in my life. Imagine a family of 11 depending on charcoal work that earns me a small profit of 300 KES per day! It has been a life of struggle since in most cases my family is forced to skip some meals while my children are also sent out of school. This has affected me physiologically and I am always under stress.
