How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year, I hope to complete the construction of a kitchen that I began after finishing the main house. I have been motivated to work hard on these projects as well as to ensure that my business grows. The profit from my current business will be useful in obtaining construction materials for the project, which I anticipate will be completed within the next few months. I also plan to build a dairy shed to help with restraining and feeding my cows because the available space on our property does not allow for free grazing.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I appreciate that GiveDirectly sends officers who go directly to the recipients' homes, with no influence from a community leader. Everyone felt and appreciated the fairness because they were able to interact with the officers throughout the registration process. We also received the same amounts and spent them independently, boosting the payment of school fees and other diverse spending based on the individual's decision. I hope that the same thing can be done in other villages so that other households can go through the same transformation that we did.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I began building a new house with a portion of my first transfer but stopped after using up some of the materials that I could afford at the time. I put the construction work on hold because I was expecting the second transfer. When I received the second transfer, I purchased 34 iron sheets for $8 each, as well as floor tiles, ceiling boards, and wall paints, and I paid the labor charges with a portion of the remaining funds when the construction was completed. I am relieved that my family of five now has enough space and a decent home, which has greatly increased our esteem when entertaining visitors. I later spent the remainder on a farewell for my son, who was about to start university after I bought him a suitcase to carry his belongings. Previously, I relied on a small maize buying and selling business as well as surplus milk from my cow that I could sell to cover household expenses.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I realised that I had received my transfer, I was at my workplace when I was engaged in selling maize. Then suddenly, I heard my phone ringing. Upon checking, I saw a text notification showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly. This was the best news that came the way that early morning, I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness because it was a financial breakthrough in my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My son was able to sit for his final exams which gives me the greatest joy as a mother. I feel so fulfilled as a parent knowing that the future of my son is bright. Secondly, I was able to renovate my house in a short period. The transfer has brought so much happiness to our lives in an amazing way. We are grateful for the support that lifted our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My Son was about to sit for his final exams at the University. But, the major problem was that he needed to have cleared all the school fees arrears for him to be allowed in the exam room. I was stranded and devastated, Fortunately for us, the transfer came at the right time of need. I was relieved and happy, I then used KES 20,000 on my Sons school fees and then I used KES 15,000 on renovating my house. Finally, I used the remaining amount to buy a cow worth KES 15,000. I am a mother of seven children, though only three are still under my care. I am happy to have accomplished so much in a short time which I was unable to do before due to financial constant school fees responsibilities.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I'm in polygamous family with 17 children. Our husband is too old and no longer productive. We therefore struggle to educate and feed our children alone. I pay anual school fees worth KES 100,000 for my children studying in the university. Give Directly money means a lot to me since it will help me clear school fees.We are happy as a family to be among the beneficiaries
What is the happiest part of your day?
My boy passed well in highschool and was admitted to a public university. That was a great success as a family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Sustaining my family while paying for my children school fees is a big problem. I have to meet deadline before they seat for their exams. This put me on so much pressure.
