How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different than how it has been because I own dairy cows that I am currently rearing in my homestead. In the meantime, they have started producing milk in large quantities is so promising. I have started the business of selling the milk to the dairy shops and neighbors and generate an income. To add to that, my family is now enjoying taking milk every morning. This has made them healthier becasue previously I couldn't afford to purchase from my neighbors. I am now glad becasue I am now having it all at no cost. The money I earn from the sale of milk has enabled me to comfortably fulfill my family's basic needs with ease.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does everything so perfectly in that the money was non-refundable and unconditional. We all had the privilege of choosing what to purchase provided it was legit. Also, the money was sent directly to our mobile phones without delay. I do not see any sector GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on purchasing some building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, nails, and some timber. This was for the construction of a new house and a small business house. Initially, I used to sleep under a small temporary house that was leaking every rainy season. Also with the business house, I will start a business if selling some petrol to since it's of high demand. With the remaing amount, I cleared school fees for my children to avoid them being sent home frequently. With the remaining amount, bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was from the farm when my mobile phone started vibrating continuously. I was even shocked since it was unusual, I then decided to check only to realize it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and started celebrating while heading to break the good news as well,
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having have taken my children to school has brought the biggest difference in my daily life. Since I never had the opportunity to go to school, I had always been having the dream of sending my children to school and get a good education. However, before the coming of GiveDirectly my children have been sent home for fees every now and then, and sometimes they could stay even for months at home. This is because of the poverty life that had stricken my household the little I was earning was sometimes not enough for the daily meals. And this was really affecting their academic performance and sometimes they could miss important exams. I am now glad as a parent because they are now studying without any distabunces and I am hopeful that their future will be bright together with their children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on clearing school fees for my children who are in secondary school. The money came at the right time since they were resuming back and I had no coin. I also bought some iron sheets, building poles, thread, and timber. This was for the construction of a new house and also renovating that of my son which was also collapsing. I then bought a goat at KES 3000. With the remaing amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my children and decent clothes.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It has been the trend in our village that every household is transiting from the old grass thutched houses that requires a lot of maintenance to modern, decent iron roofed ones. My wish has been to build a good shelter for my family like others in the village because the one I have is small, leaking and about to fall. Receiving this money means realization of my dream since I am planning to use $ 300 to purchase iron sheet, building poles and labor charges. I will use $ 600 of the remaining amount to clear School fees for my 2 children who are in form 3.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day . Waking up healthy with my family and refreshed after a good night rest despite my financial challenges gives my joy and energy to starts my day's work.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being illerate, uskilled and unable to secure a good job to support my family's needs especially education for my children has been the biggest hardship in my life. Casual activities like Charcoal vending is what I have been doing to support my family. This job earns me very little income of less than 2 dollar per day which I use it to feed my family of 9 members. My children are normally send out of school due to lack of school fees something that has affected their performance. I am constantly worried that they I may fail to educate them as a parent something that has taken away my joy in life.
