How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new or additional goals in life. I want to concentrate on my grocery business and expand it so that I can be able to continue supporting my children in their education. Seeing them concentrate on their studies without worrying about being sent back home brings me so much joy and it's something I would love to continue experiencing by paying their school fees on time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly officers respectfully conducted themselves and treated everyone equally. The fact that GiveDirectly chose to give us financial aid made it more outstanding than other organisations that give out help to people. I do not see anything wrong with what GiveDirectly did.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used to live in a small grass-thatched house that was in a bad shape and the roof had started leaking during the rainy season. We had no privacy as a family since one would see everything we owned at a glance, and our children used to sleep in our neighbor's house. Being a casual laborer, the pay was not lucrative to achieve some of the things we wanted. Upon receiving my recent transfer, I spent KES 35000 to build a more spacious iron-roofed house and used KES 10000 to pay my debtors. From the remaining amount, I spent KES 4000 to pay school fees for my children to avoid them from being sent back home and used the remaining KES 3700 on food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning as I had just started the casual work I was doing on my neighbor's farm. With the message alert that I received, I could not hesitate to check it up. The information in the message was so exciting that I could not resist celebrating it loudly. I thanked God for enabling GiveDirectly to deliver on the promise they had given us. We had been laying down plans with my family on how best we would spend once it lands in our account. Throughout that day, I had to keep working as I needed to later get home and plan with my family on when to start initiating the projects that we had already planned.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the pride of enjoying enough supply of milk from the cow I bought. It is indeed a great feeling waking up every morning to milk from my farm. I have been able to save a lot that I would have used in buying a liter every day making it easier for me to sort other household bills.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
At the top of our spending list was to ensure that we obtain a good breed of lactating cow. I had been working hard on the daily casual labor in the nearby farms where I would be given at least a liter of milk every day and extra pay whenever the total payment exceeds the cost of milk. This had been straining a lot since I could not save even a cent from my daily work. I was able to spend KES35000 on securing lactating cattle that had been of great help to the household in the past month. We are now able to get enough milk every day saving me from the strenuous work that I had been doing to earn just a little amount. I also ensured that I purchased new clothing for my four children, and obtained two sacks of maize at 5600 that we are still using as foodstuff. I also had an ongoing construction of my son's house that I had to complete and bring in new bedding, furniture, and fix a new door at a total cost of KES7000. With the remaining amount, I managed to settle the debt of KES7000 making me comfortable and free from all debts that have been worrying a lot.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improved living standard. I have a small hut with leaking roof, Every time it rains we are forced to sleep in one corner of the house with my children. No privacy and the children are growing up daily. I intend to use the KES 40,000 to build a 3 bedroom iron sheet roofed house. KES 30,000 to buy a daily cow that will give me milk and the remaining amount will go for beddings, clothes and school fee's for the children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of my day, This is the time I have been paid from casual jobs I do and am sure that the children have gotten something to eat that day. Hence that is the time I feel relieved and relaxed.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is financial constraints. It has been an uphill raising school fees for my four children. I depend only in casual jobs with no regular income. I live each day as it comes. Such kind of life is not easy, I am always worried about the next day, my thoughts always is about how to educate my children and how to manage my family without constant borrowing.
