How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal in life is to buy a two-wheel machine that people use in tilling the farms. This machine uses less oil hence it will be cheaper compared to hiring a tractor for land preparation purposes. A friend of mine has this machine and when I enquired more about it, one spends less than KES 800 on fuel enough to till one acre of land and this will enable me to save around KES 1200 from the money I would spend on hiring a tractor to till the same size of land. Also, I will be renting it to other people at a fee and use the money to cater to our basic needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The training that we received before enrollment was meaningful to me not only during the transfer period but also during my day-to-day activities. Officers enrolled people without discrimination and would even visit one household severally if they did not find anyone at home during their previous visits. I did not see anything that it does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Our family land is small and it had always been my prayer to buy my own no matter how small it would be. This is because the maize I usually harvest would barely last my family for three months. When I received my first transfer, I spent a good amount from it to pay a down payment toward the purchase of land from my neighbor, and on receiving the second one, I spent KES 20000 to clear the balance. Also, I spent KES 20000 to buy some items that were needed by my inlaws since I had not completed paying my wife's dowry. Apart from this, I used KES 6500 to lease a farm in preparation for planting and spent the remaining amount on food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at the farm working when heard a phone ringing, on checking it was my friend asking me if I had received the transfer I hurriedly hanged up the call to confirm if mine was in, that's when I saw a mpesa notification, I was filled with joy when I saw that I had received the transfer as promised.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My life is different now because I can say that I proudly own a piece of land, thanks to the transfer I was able to realise my dream, I always wanted to own a piece of land but I could not afford it because of lack of funds, I also settled my debtors the money I owned them, therefore, I am at peace with my self and also grateful for the support because it changed my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My transfer just came on time when I had seen a piece of land that was being sold, I knew that this was my only chance and perfect timing, When I received my transfer I took Ksh 40,000 and used it in purchasing a piece of land, though it was not the full amount, I am optimistic that with the next transfer I will be able to clear the remaining balance of Ksh 20,000, I used the remaining amount in offsetting my debts.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been struggling to complete my house for sometime now because I dont have any formal employment. As a result, I have been living in a small hut with my family. Receiving this money will enable me to not only complete my house, but it will also enable me to buy a calf and some 2 goats. These animals will breed with time and will enable me to secure my children's education in the future because I will sell them.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because this is the time I have brought some food for the family and we get to share in the little that I got during the day
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I rely on casual labor such as weeding and sometimes the work is not available. When this happens, it means that my family will go to bed hungry. As a result, I have to go and borrow from family and friends so that we can eat. The biggest hardship for me currently is food security for my family.
