How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
One of my biggest dreams is to major in milk production. I plan to realise this dream through the little savings I get from my current dairy farm and also by applying for a loan in the farmer's Sacco that I am a member of. With it, I believe that the future would be bright for my family and I.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly was transparent in all its process. I would wish for it to continue helping the less privileged in our communities.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have four children who are in primary school and one in secondary school. They have fees problems such that most of the time they are out of school. Raising school fees for them has been challenging because I only depend on my small business which is not doing well. When I received my second transfer, I cleared the arrears which was totalling to Ksh 10,000. I also bought one cow worth Ksh 30,000 to add to my flock. My food stock was almost over, so I replenished some more for Ksh 8,000. I also bought some new furniture(chairs and table) for Ksh 5,000.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 4 pm and I was busy farming in my kitchen garden when suddenly my phone rang hence notifying me of a new message. I stopped to check it and wow! it was an SMS saying that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was so happy when I saw the SMS and I thanked God for the blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. I managed to clear all the debts that I had and hence I have had some peace of mind having done so. I now have a cow that is about to calve. I will hence not incur any more costs of buying milk for the consumption of my family. Other than that, I was also able to buy furniture that I didn't have before and my children are happy because they got new clothes for themselves. I am thus grateful to GiveDirectly for everything.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30000 from my recent transfer on buying a cow. This was my topmost priority when I got the transfer because I did not have one and hence I usually incur the cost of buying milk for our consumption. I usually buy 2 liters of milk at KES 40 per litre which is costly to me since I am a single mother and I only have my business of buying and selling milk that I depend on to provide for my family of six. Other than the cow, I also bought beans at a total cost of KES 1200 for planting and a bag of maize at KES 3800 for our consumption. I also bought a chair and a table at a total cost of KES 6500 and a few utensils, that is, serving bowls and a big cooking pot at a total cost of KES 2000. I bought the furniture because I did not have any before in my house. I also managed to clear school fees arrears for my children where I spent KES 1000 doing so. With the remaining amount of money, I used it in settling some small debts that I was owing some people and I bought clothes for my children. What does receiving this money mean to you?
I love farming and I practice it with my piece of land. I currently do crop farming alone. I sold the two cows I had to settle my husband's hospital bill. In the last four years, I have been a milk vendor in the village. I love this business since it has enabled me provide for my family. I have had a wish to have another herd on my farm, to boost my milk business and to reduce my household daily expenditure. To me, receiving this money means high profits and good health in my family. I am planning to buy a dairy cow approximately KES 30000. This is an asset to us and from it I we will be enjoying nutritious meals. I am certain, will have more litres of milk to sell. This is will improve my income. In addition, I will keep the offspring so that I can sell to educate my children and to meet other financial needs arising in my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a widowed mother of four minors. My joy is to see a healthy happy family this is why I always prioritize their daily needs. I practice farming to support our needs and in the last six months, my greatest joy has been drawn from my maize farm. I have matured maize on my farm which are ready for harvest. To me, this is an assurance of enough for in the coming days.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the main challenge in my family. Though I am a businesswoman, my profits of approximately KES 150 a day is not enough to fully meet our daily expenditure. Due to low rainfall, our crop production has not been reliable this means we always have to buy food. With a family of six, we hardly afford enough meals in our family.
