What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I did my KCPE this year although I had tuition fee arrears of KES 1,800. So when I received my transfer, I prioritized paying off KES 1,500 to get a school leaving certificate. I am glad that I am only left with KES 300 fee arrears which I shall clear as soon as I get my next transfer. I did this because my parents are hard-pressed financially. They are solely peasant farmers thus they struggle to raise money to support the family in terms of buying food. As a result, they could not help me pay the arrears. I contributed the rest of my transfer to aid in buying food for our family since whatever my parents had were insufficient to cater for all our basic needs.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give directly does very well. Never would I have guessed that I would get some financial support for my schooling. This has been what I have been struggling with as my parents could not afford it. Now, I am not only assured of completing my studies but also starting a business of my own. I am yet to note any area of improvement.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I am still a student, I fully depend on my father, who is a farmer, for financial support. With very few earnings from this, he has been struggling to pay the school fees of my 5 siblings and I. So, when I got my first transfer of ksh1200, I used ksh300 to reduce my school fee arrears and the remaining amount, I used to pay for my sibling's school fees. The second transfer that I received, came in when I was unwell. Therefore, I used ksh1000 to cover my medical bill and the amount that remained, I used it all on the payment of my school fees and I now have arrears of ksh1200 that I plan to settle using my next transfer.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The message actually arrived at night and I only saw it the next morning and to say I was happy would not be enough to describe how I felt because at the time I had been not going to school for two days due to fee balance. But the arrival of the money only meant that I could finally settle my debt and that of my siblings.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The money has helped clear a huge portion of the debts my siblings and I had which makes me grateful because I can assist my parents financially when they do not have money and my siblings and I can also attend school without any interruptions.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I happen to still be in highschool although I got enrolled which I am very thankful for since after I received the money I went ahead to buy myself a pair of school shoes since the ones I had prior were old and torn and therefore I took KES 400 and bought a new pair which made me very happy. As for the rest of the money I decided to pay school fees for myself and two of my younger siblings since at that time they had been home for around two days due to the debt that my parents could not afford to pay at the time so I paid KES 900 for all of us by splitting KES 300 between us. But since KES 800 is all I was left with my dad gave me KES 100 to make it KES 900.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I consider myself a bright student and I wanted to study hard and get my family out of poverty. This has not been possible because I have been in and out of school almost everyday due to lack of school fees. Even today, I am here because I have been sent for school fees, this pains my a lot because my hope for bright future keeps fading everyday. I am planning to be saving this money for school fees only and I'm now hopeful.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite the challenges that I go through, I still manage to perform well in class and this brings happiness and joy in my heart.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Sleeping on the floor is not something that anyone would wish for but poverty has pushed us to there. Sometimes I wake up with a painful back and this has sometimes affected my concentration in class this affecting my performance.
