How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that, today I trust that in a few days, I will be living in a decent house courtesy of GiveDirectly's transfer. I decided to used the whole of my second transfer on building a house which is almost done because the current one is in a pathetic condition. A decision that I do not regret making. I also plan to goats and revive my business with the remaining amount of money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion what I love about GiveDirectly is that they came and brought a big changed that we had never seen in our village. Most of us were able to meet our goals. We also have phones that we did not have before.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my transfer on purchasing building materials. The construction is going on and almost done. The current house is on it verge of collapsing. The reeds that had covered the roof are old and swept off. I had to patch some places with the polyethylene paper. Knowing that I am almost moving in the new house is the hope that I am clinging on. I just do not know how this situation could have changed were it not for the transfer. Another plan that I have is to use the remaining amount on buying goats. I believe that the assets will help me in terms of emergency.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Having taken my son to school has really brought the biggest difference in my life. This is because he had finished his primary school education and there were no hopes of him joining high school because of the poverty life that we had. The little amount of money that I was earning was too little for him to join secondary school. After getting my first transfer, my first priority was to send him to school. I am now so happy seeing my son studying without any difficulties. I never got a chance to go to school and I did not want to see my children go through the same. I am happy seeing my dream come true because I am sure their future shall be bright as compared to mine. I have been able to achieve all this through financial support from GiveDirectly. I feel so blessed and happy for being among the beneficiaries.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6:45 when I was going to fetch water from the dam, then I heard my phone ringing continuously. But because I am illiterate I could not comprehend the content of the message. I asked a friend of mine who had accompanied me to the dam to check what the message was all about. Upon checking he realized it was an mpesa from Give directly. I was so happy about receiving such a gift in my life.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on paying school fees for my son who was joining secondary school. Actually I received the money in good time because I was so sure my son could not have joined school anytime soon. I then bought some iron sheets and a few building poles. This was for the purpose of constructing a new house because the previous one was very small and in critical condition, The remaining amount of money I bought some enough foodstuffs for my children and some other household items that I did not have.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It has been the trend that every household is moving from the old grass thatched houses to modern and decent one. I have wished to construct a nice house for my family like other in the village but I have not accomplished this desire due to inadequate financial resources. Currently, I am living in an incomplete grassy thatched roofed house which is about to collapse. I am planning to spend 300 dollars in building a specious iron-roofed house something that will earn me the respect I have lost for long. Also, I will use the remaining amount to purchase 10 goats that will act as my future investment for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is always the busy part of my day doing households chores until 10 am then I work in my farm up to 12 noon. It is in the afternoon that I am free to relax with my family hence, I consider it as the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Failure to meet my desire of owning a decent shelter for my family due to inadequate finances has been my biggest challenge in life. Sleeping under single room with my six children have eaten away my joy in life something that has lowered my self-esteem. I am happy that I will be able to construct a decent one with my transfers that l am about to receive.
