How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have build a better and spacious house for my family. We used to live in a small grass thatched house which was leaking from inside. The house was so old and it was almost falling apart. We were being exposed to cold during the rainy season. I depend on small scale farming and do casual jobs in the village. I sell charcoals to earn an income to meet other basic household needs. I had no extra money to saved so that I can build a better house. I didn't know one day I will live in decent house. When I received the second transfer I found it wise to invest on building a better house. Currently I live in a decent house, we are no longer exposed to cold like before. My family members are so happy because they have their own rooms where they can sleep without any disturbance. GiveDirectly has changed our living standard. We are so grateful and thankful for the support.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was heading to my daily hustle when I heard my phone ringing. Since I was late for work I didn't bother to check the content of the notification. However, I was a bit curious and decided to check who could have sent an SMS at such an hour. I couldn't believe what I saw, it was an Mpesa message from SEGOVIA TECHNOLOGY. I was overwhelmed with joy and even opted to change the direction and headed to church. Up to date I still feel like a dream to me having to receive a huge amount of money that is non-refundable.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
For all those years I have been dreaming of owning a decent house since the one I am currently sheltering on is a single room with a damaged roof. I have always been worried about my family since it was growing and I had no coin to facilitate the construction of a new house. Therefore some of my children had to shelter in their friend's houses which were quite far from where we stay. I was always worried about their safety that maybe some wild animals might harm them on their way to their friends. In addition to that, they never had ample space and time to study at night and thus were ready to demoralize them, affecting their academic performance. However, it is all gone becasue, after the completion of the new house, we no longer have to worry about the rains, the wild animals and night, and even our privacy as a family. Also, my children can now comfortably study at night without any interference, and this promise will improve their performance in school courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer in buying some building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, nails, timber and a wooded door which costed a total of KES 45000. This was purposely for the construction of a new house because the previous one, was a single room with a grass thatched roof. Also with the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs such as a vegetable, maize flour, and some other household items that I was lacking

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My current house is tiny and grass thatched. Maintenance has been a big problem since I am forced to replace the roof every four months because some insects eat up the grass. I plan on building a one bedroom house with an iron sheet roof at a cost of 300 USD. I have also budgeted 250 USD for buying six goats. Goats multiply very fast and this will help me pay school fees for my children in years to come.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I wake up every morning worrying about what my children will eat. This means that I will be up and about the whole day to ensure my children have something to eat by evening. During the evening,my mind is usually stress free after a busy day. This makes it the happiest part of my day. I spend the better part of the day preparing charcoal for sale which is a very tiresome job. I get to relax in the evening with my family without having much to worry about.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a mother of two. Getting income to satisfy the family's needs is what has been my biggest hardship. This is because I depend on subsistence farming which has not been working out quite well due to prolonged drought. This has forced me to depend on charcoal vending which is a very tasking job. I have always had a passion in tailoring but since I completed my primary school studies,I have not been able to raise money to take up the course. I believe the tailoring skill will help boost my income.
