How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a small business of buying and selling maize flour in my locality. I am aiming to expand this business so that I will increase my daily sales and support my spouse well in meeting our daily needs. Since our daily expenditures have been reduced due to the investments that we did using the transfer, I am planning to be saving part of my daily profits and later use it to achieve this goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving out unconditional cash transfers to poor people so that they can use it to uplift their lives. Due to this, people in my village have been able to acquire things that they were not able to own before. I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I purchased a small water tank worth KES 7000 using my transfer. I decided on this since I had been walking for 1 hour per trip going to fetch water from the stream and I would make at least three trips a day. I will be using it to harvest rainwater for domestic use and get to relax from the struggles of fetching water. Also, I spent KES 9000 to purchase three goats since they increase in number over a short time and they can easily be converted to cash when need be. I bought two beds and mattresses using KES 9000 since we had been sleeping on the traditional beds and I usually felt back pains in the morning when I woke up. I used the remaining amount on food after spending KES 7000 on my son's medication.

I was at home busy doing my house chores when I had my phone ringing, it was around 9 am, upon checking my phone, that was when I saw a Mpesa notification showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly, I was overwhelmed with joy, I thanked God for the support that I had received, I knew all my plans would be realized now that I had the money at hand, I am happy and grateful for this wonderful gift that brought smiles to lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I have managed to accomplish so much that I never thought that I would have achieved in a short period, in that, I bought a dairy cow meaning that I would be able to save up on the costly. I am also happy that my children have a place that they can sit on while eating, I can comfortably invite my neighbours without worrying about where they would sit. I am so grateful for the support that I was given because it changed our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a consistent farmer in the village, For a long time now I have been buying milk for our daily consumption which is very expensive for us due to unreliable sources of income, Therefore, I decided to use my first transfer in buying a dairy cow worth KES28,000. In addition that I bought sofa set seats so that my kids can comfortably relax while enjoying their meals, lastly, I bought 2 bags of maize at KES 8000. I am humbled and happy that I was able to accomplish so much within a short period, my children are happy now that we own a dairy cow. The support that I got from GiveDirectly lifted my life to a higher level and I am thankful for it.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this money I will buy two cows at $300 each and also use $200 to buy goats as it will boost my family income though sale of milk and goats in future. Now that we always experience perennial water shortage in our area, I will then set the remaining $200 to buy a plastic water tank so that I will be harvesting water during the rainy season.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening hours around 8.p.m is my happiest part of the day, this is the time we are resting with my family. Am happy that my family had eaten and I have managed my day's duties.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I developed chest complications and it has cost me a lot of money for treatment. With my health condition, I can no longer do casual jobs to earn a living and support my family. This is the biggest hardship I have been going through.
