How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am a stay-at-home mother, I do farming for domestic purposes. My short-term goal is to rear chickens, buy chicks at $2, rear them and sell them at $8. I would also like to install water at my compound so that I can farm more easily.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am happy when I get visitors from GiveDirectly, I get to ask questions on a one-on-one basis. It is exciting to identify them with their voices.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been farming all my life mostly for domestic purposes while I take care of my family. My husband is the breadwinner of the family, he is a teacher at a primary school nearby where he gets $100 a month. He takes care of me and my two children who are in college. Before receiving the transfer life was hard, because my husband's money was mostly for their education, getting food for the family was also challenging and most days we would skip breakfast and lunch and take dinner to save money for other bills such as water and transport fare. Receiving this transfer has enabled me to pay school fees for my children without straining my husband and using the money from my husband's salary to buy food and water, spent $400 on them, and bought a mattress for $80 because I had nothing to sleep on, I was using pieces of clothes and bought food with $50.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6pm while I was in the process of preparing supper for my family when I received the text message confirming that I have received the money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy when I got the money because I was stranded especially with regards to my son's school fees arrears because we all used to depend on my husband's monthly salary which was always marred by delays in addition to it being so little for even the family's immediate needs. Therefore, getting this money from GiveDirectly was a relief to us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly I am so grateful to God for GiveDirectly. We are now getting regular meals, decent breakfast and we are generally happy and grateful as a family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 20000 on settling my son's school fees arrears because I consider his good education as something that will be a tribute to GiveDirectly since I was stranded and he was at home due to lack of school fees but when GiveDirectly came, I was able to take him back to school. With that good education, I stand the chance to count on him in the future to help me address the financial challenges I will be facing because I believe he will find employment.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means paying school fees for my two children who are in college. I will use KES 70000 to pay the school fees. This will reduce the balance from KES 10000 to KES 30000. I will also use KES 40000 to start a shop business. This will create a base for emergency cases in future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
One of my children got bursary of KES 30000 from Kilifi county government. This has really boosted me. The bursary brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My children are in college. I have no job and their father is working as a casual labourer. They have been on and off of school because of the fees problem. Lack of job is the current challenge I am facing.
