How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different in that I now own my own motorbike for my own transportation business. I am now self employed. I was employed before as a motorbike rider whereby I offered transportation services for my employer who would receive a certain commission from me everyday. I now own my own motorbike and all the money that I make is my own.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly has done well in enabling people in the village to develop their lives. People have built houses and others have bought livestock. I have also been able to start my own business. Give Directly has done a lot of good in the village. I have seen nothing wrong that Give Directly has done.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer to buy goats and cows, to purchase mattresses for myself and my children and to pay school fees. I bought goats and cows because I hope they can procreate and generate wealth for me in future. I can also get produce for sale such as milk or meat from these livestock, or I can sell the animals in case of any emergency that I come across in future. I bought mattresses because my children and I used to sleep on old and tattered mattresses. I was employed as a motorbike rider before and I only made enough money to sustain my household's most important needs such as meals or school fees. My wife cooks and sells local delicacies known as 'chapati' and 'mandazi'. We did not make enough money to afford us the luxury to buy better mattresses. I am grateful that we now have new and comfortable mattresses on our beds.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I'm now at peace and happy because I can now meet the family needs with a lot of ease and at the same time I can save some little money. This is because I bought a motorcycle with the money I received from GiveDirectly which I use for taxi services unlike previously when I didn't have a source of income. This is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early morning when I was seated in the house wondering on how the day would be when I heard the phone ring. Since I couldn't easily reach the phone, I told my son to get me the phone and to my surprise, it was a confirmation message that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy, shared the news with my spouse, and we both celebrated.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I didn't have a stable source of income previously and in most cases, I could rely on casual jobs which were not reliable thus I wasn't able to meet most of the family needs. The moment when I received the first transfer I bought a secondhand motorcycle which I'm using for taxi services. In addition to that, my children didn't have proper bedding since their bedding was worn out, so I bought them bedding with a portion of the money. I also used a portion of the money to cater for school requirement for my children who are in primary school. This is because they had school fee arrears and their school attires were worn out too.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have always wanted to buy three cows and ten goats which will act as my financial security. This will mean a lot to me because I will be able to secure the future of my four children wh will need school fees eventually when they join secondary school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I usually go to my farm at around 7 am and work on my farm till noon. This makes me happy as eventhough it is a small piece of land, it provides food for my family as I usually manage to harvest one and a half bag of maize from it. This is meant to feed my family at least two months before I resort to buying food from the shops.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I do not have a stable job and my family depend on me for their basic needs. To make it worse, our farms are not doing well due to drought. Whenever I plant maize, I am not able to get a good harvest to last for more than four months.
