How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After utilizing the second transfer, I got an idea that turned into a goal and I am looking forward to making it a reality. After seeing how the community people travel long distances in sourcing for water I got a plan of buying a huge water tank of a capacity of at least 3000 liters. This tank will be storing water not just for family use but for commercial purposes. By doing so I will have got an income-generating activity which I am sure it will sustain me since water is life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly changed the lives of the people who benefitted from their transfers whether directly or indirectly. This is because, of all the organizations which came to us, none of them gave their help without conditions except GiveDirectly. The essence of giving support without conditions helped us to think outside the box and do things we felt will be of help to us and uplift us from the kind of life we were living. Some had no houses, others no bedding, no livestock, and many other things thus they utilized the transfers in equipping themselves where they felt the need.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After withdrawing the money, I planned to start livestock farming. To ensure this plan works well, I bought 10 goats for KES 33000.00. These goats serve as an investment because very soon I will be in a position to convert some of them for money with a profit. I also paid school fees for my two children who are in college and secondary school. I paid KES 5000.00 to each of them. For the little amount that remained, I bought some foodstuff for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so good the moment I received the money because there were things I desired to have for so long but I neither had the ability nor means to get them because I don't have a regular job and depend on some little contributions and stipends I receive normally from my area residents as their area Village Elder. Therefore, I was so happy when I received the money that I had been promised. This brought so much peace and happiness to my heart.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I no longer have to incur the little debts and loans to cater for my family's immediate needs which allows me the time to budget in a very smooth way and with an absolute peace of mind. This also allows me to save a little money to address some recurrent and emergency challenges, which equally gives me the much desired time to rest and comfortably plan for my family. All thanks to GiveDirectly
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 33000 on building a bigger and better house for my family and myself, with enough space to even comfortably receive and host guests. I did this because the house we were living previously was so small and couldn't comfortably host my sizeable family, and I didn't want my children to be hosted by neighbors due to lack of enough space in our house. I also spent KES 4000 on settling my two daughters school fees arrears, whom are in secondary school and college. I did this because I did not want their education to be interrupted or disrupted by fees arrears no matter how little the arrears are because that would make my daughters miss a lot in school. Settling my children's school fees arrears gave me so much peace in my heart. I also believe that with a good education, they will grow to be independent and responsible ladies and I'll also be able to count on them in the future to help me address the challenges I will be facing even though they are and will be under no obligation to help me because I also know that it is my responsibility as their father to prepare and give them a bright future, which is through a good education.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a divorced man with a family of four children who are in school. My wife left me due to poverty. This is because I had no better house for my family and no source of income. The small house I used to live in collapsed and now I have no house at all. My young brother gave me his house to live as I look for ways to get my own. However, due to the burden of responsibility, I have not been able to build one. My children needs to get basic education and at the same time meet their basic needs. I work as a watchman in a local primary school. I receive a monthly salary of 5000 KES. This money is not enough to build a house and save for my children education. Besides, I am the village elder of my village. Many people come to settle their disputes at my compound. However, people have been laughing and mocking me because I have no house and yet I am the head of the village. This has brought a lot of shame to me. My ambition is to build my two bedroom house that will coast 30,000 KES so that I can restore my dignity and have shelter for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month I received my monthly pay that accrued for eight months. Imagine working for eight months without a pay and all or a sudden you received a notification that you have received 40000 KES. You can imagine the excitement. I felt so much excited because I was able to clear all my debts in school and at the local shop where I have been taking flour daily for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest worry that has been giving me sleepless nights is lack of enough money to educate my children. I work as a watchman in a local primary school where I earn 5000 KES every month. However, most of the time, I may stay for more than three months before receiving my salary. This gives me a lot of stress since I have children who need to eat and attend school. My ambition had been to get a source of a stable income that will help settle my bills. I intend to use part of the cash transfer to buy ten goats at a cost of 30000 KES that I will sell when they multiply as an investment for my children education.
