How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
If I could not have received the money I could not have done large scale watermelon farming because I did not have enough land to cultivate. But since I spent the money on watermelon farming I have managed to get enough produce that I have sold to the nearest market and got the money that i spent to pay for my children school fee.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion give directly did very well by giving out unconditional money because people has different priorities and restricting them could not have been the best. It was also a good thing by not involving the authority into the program because it could have attracted alot of conflicts.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent most of the cash transfer to lease one and a half hectares of land where I have planted watermelon in a large scale. I have never planted watermelon in that scale because I had a very small farm and even a part from having a small piece of land, I was not able to cultivate a bigger portion of land using my own hands as I used to work before when I had a small piece of land. So also hired a tractor that tilled the whole farm being that it was too big that I was not able to caltivate it using my hand. I am very grateful to give directly for helping me achieve my dream of plant watermelon in large scale. I managed getting enough produce that I sold to the community and act as a source of income for my family expenditure. I was able to pay school for my children with ease since i got enough out of the sale.
