How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
A motorcycle in our family is an added asset that has really impacted my life and the household as a whole. A profit of at least 300KES daily has been of great support to us in that we had been able to manage all the daily expenditures. This had not been the case before we received the transfer since we never had any constant source of income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Receiving the transfer from GiveDirectly was the best thing to have ever happen to me after such a long time of struggle looking for a reliable source of income. In my opinion, the decision to give us a free cash transfer with the freedom to choose how we will spend it was work well done for GiveDirectly. On the flip side, there was a small percentage of youth that never had a chance to receive the transfer. With the inquiries I made, they were not in a position to receive it since they are not always residing in the village. This was not the best decision in my opinion since as a youth, one is expected to be out at all times trying to earn their own and such a project would have been a great boost to them but they never receive it
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the first transfer, there was a decision with my husband to save the whole amount as we await the second transfer. We came to this decision since the investment we needed to put it in was a bit expensive for just one transfer. On receiving the second one, we used 102000KES on purchasing a motorcycle. This is one project we have been hoping to one day venture into as my husband has been working as a hired rider. We are glad that all the income accruing from the business goes to our account unlike before when he would only come home with as little as 150KES. With the small remaining amount, we bought foodstuff and clothing for our children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
We felt very happy when we received the money from GiveDirectly. We could not believe that we will ever be able to get such a huge sum of money that we will not have to repay. This was a dream come true for us because we were going to get what we have always wanted.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
This transfer has brought a very big difference in our lives. With the cow that we bought with part of the transfer, we will now be able to have our own milk that the children can consume and we will be able to sell part of it. The money from these sales will enable us to have some source of income that we can use on other things. Also, with the motorbike that we bought for business, we will be able to have a source of income that we can depend on even after the money that we are getting from GiveDirectly gets finished. The goats that I bought, will reproduce and can be able to sell some whenever I need money to pay for my children’s school fees. Thank you GiveDirectly for making this happen.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
This money from GiveDirectly has helped me a lot. I was able to buy a cow and two goats with part of the transfer. I was also able to buy some clothes for my children and food for them to eat. With the remaining part of the money, my husband and I decided that we partner with my mother-in-law in contributing money to buy a motorbike that we shall use to start our own business. We have always had the desire to have our cow but due to lack of finances, we have not been able to buy one. This transfer has therefore brought a ray of hope in our lives, we will now be able to have milk that the children can drink and we will also be able to have some for sale. With this motorbike, we will be able to have our source of income that we can depend on even after the money that we are receiving from GiveDirectly gets finished. The goats I bought will reproduce and I will be able to sell some whenever I need money to cater for my children’s school fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that my family shall enjoy a higher living standard. Precisely, I will utilize some of the funds on purchasing a motorbike that will be used to offer taxi services within my vicinity to attract more income for my family. Also, I will spend some of the transfers on buying a cow to pride us with milk for consumption and sale of the surpluses. Finally, I will spend some of the money on buying food stuffs and clothes for my family members.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am seeing the end of a good and well-spend day. This is the time that I am with almost every family member, sharing stories about the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In the year 2010, my husband was seriously injured when he was involved in a road accident. Accordingly, we were forced to sell most of the property we had, including a piece of land and a motorbike that we had purchased. Though I am happy that my husband has fully recovered, I feel that my family is leading a substandard life and owns virtually nothing. Hence, the unfortunate incident that befell my husband serves as the biggest hardship we have faced in life as a family.
