How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main aim was to improve the state and condition of my house by reinforcing its walls and building pillars around it as well as put a cement floor. This is because I wanted to make it more permanent to last more years into the future. It was all I wanted and since I had gotten the money then there was no thinking twice about it.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does so well, in my opinion but it depends on an individual's self discipline with the cash and how they spend it. If they followed the plan they had and addressed the challenges they were facing then they got helped. Personally, I was able to address the most pressing challenges I was facing and I am now living a better life compared to the life I was living before GiveDirectly came to our village. I am so grateful, and I don't think that there's anything that it didn't do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent almost all the transfer in excess of KES 50000 and more on improving my house by reinforcing its walls and constructing pillars around it because I wanted to make it more permanent as well as attractive for the long term. I also did that so as to protect it from weakening or withering as it is made of mud walls which can weaken and collapse anytime which poses a huge risk to our lives. I am feeling so happy because it is now more attractive than it used to before with its ugly mud walls and that everything went according to the plan I had. I am so impressed because I used to depend on casual jobs that could hardly raise enough money even for my family's immediate needs therefore improving my house this way was just an impossible dream that was only made possible by GiveDirectly. I am so grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Gone hope for my children’s education was resurrected. It was around 9am when I received the transfer message. Being unable to read made me access the information at around 10.30am. No sooner had my children arrive home after being sent out of school for fees, than I got someone to clarify the message, without wasting time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, my children were being sent home for fees almost on daily basis, the only source I was leaning on was bursaries from either the office of the Member of Parliament or MCA’s. Applying for the bursaries was not a guarantee of being awarded. But since the day I received the first transfer from GiveDirectly, I settled all the fee arrears and my children are comfortable in school. This is the vivid difference that is seen and if it were not for this organization, my children wouldn’t be in school now.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of eight children. Two are in secondary school; four are in primary school while two are still young to be enrolled in school. Immediately when I knew I have received some money, I instructed my children to go back since I was going to pay for them. I set aside KES 10000.00 for fees, I also bought some food amounting to KES 8800.00, I also bought some goats for KES 10800.00. Thereafter, I did some renovation to my children house by buying 10 pieces of iron sheets for KES 7000.00.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a bright future for my children since I have intended to educate them to University. I have been troubled in comprehending my vision but with the entrance of GiveDirectly to our village, I am confident about achieving my dream. I am planning to spend KES 70000 of my transfers to pay all school fees for my 2 children in secondary school. This will allow them to settle in school and hence, a better performance. For the remaining amount of my transfer, I will buy 10 goats that will act as an investment project to support my children's education in the future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We have been relying on charcoal work as the only source of income for our family until last month when my husband get a new job as a truck driver. This made me happy knowing that I will get an extra amount to pay school fees for my children and also cater for other house expenses like water.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Shortage of water is the current challenge that I am facing. This is due to the drought that we are experiencing in our area. I buy 3 jerricans of 20 liters of water per day which cost me KES 40 each and is not enough for my family of 10. This is very expensive for me since I have to buy food and water daily for my family.
