How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I have a new goal which is to start a retail shop. Since I am still a college student and I am responsible for my sibling's basic needs, I thought it would be good if I could have a source of income. Currently, I have been relying on temporary jobs with low wages which could not cater to all our needs including paying for our school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in almost all the sectors. The fact that I was issued a mobile phone stood out because I never had the hopes or plans to acquire it soon. I have been able to communicate with my loved ones with ease which seemed to be a challenge some days back. Also through the officers, I have been able to maneuver the Mpesa transaction processes and was after been taken through. On the other hand, I do not see any part that GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on paying my college fees of KES 6000. I just enrolled some months ago to pursue a tailoring course. I need the experience the most so that in the near figure I can run a tailoring workshop in town. Apart from this, I cleared the school fees of KES 28000 for my siblings who are in colleges, secondary, and primary schools respectively. Like their elder sister, my goal has been to see them get a better education for a brighter future together with their generations. In addition to that, I bought twenty pieces of iron sheets at KES 18000. This was purposely for the renovation of our house since it had an old roof. During the rainy season, it could leak excessively hence causing losses and damage. With the remaining amount, I bought foodstuffs for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I still remember vividly I was in the house preparing lunch for my siblings we were on half term break. I heard a message alert on my phone and after checking, I realized that there is a mpesa message indicating the I had received KES 55,000 in my account from GiveDirectly. I felt very happy for receiving the transfer since I was eagerly waiting for the transfer to boost our educational needs.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that my siblings and I are learning without any disturbance due to school fee arrears. I was able to clear the school fee balance for myself and that of my siblings. We no longer have to worried about our education after receiving aid from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With 6 children in school, two in college, one in secondary school, and the others in primary school. It has been a great challenge to support the educational needs. My mother's job as a local wine seller could not earn her enough income to meet basic needs like food as well as support our educational needs. After receiving my transfer, I spent KES 55,000 to complete the fees arrears for both of my 5 siblings and I. We were always sent home due to lack of school fees something that bothered me as well as my parent. Nowadays, we are learning without any interruption due to school fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to cater for my siblings school fees. We have been struggling with lack of school fees for long. My siblings have been sent home several times to get school fees but this has not been possible. I will use 800 dollars from the transfer to pay my siblings school fees. I will use the balance to buy food for my family. Doing this will make me happy.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon. I use the afternoon hours to mingle with my friends and this makes me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life has been lack of money to cater for my siblings school fees. My mother sells palm wine, a business that can not sustain our family. Seeing my siblings out of school due to lack of school fees breaks my heart.
