How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal that I did not have before receiving the cash transfers which is to open a retail shop within the village. According to the research that I have conducted, there are only three shops in my village which shows that this business will thrive so well when I acquire the capital.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a great job in my entire village by ensuring that every household was enrolled. Also, they fulfilled their promise by ensuring that they sent the money directly into our Mpesa accounts. This was the best idea ever because everyone has his or her own needs. I have not seen any negative action they have done so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 3000 of my second transfer on clearing fees arrears for my two children in primary schools. They have been staying at home for almost three weeks because of the pending fees. On top of that, I bought new uniforms and stationeries so that they can have a smooth learning environment like their colleagues. I also bought three goats at KES 9000. These are now the only precious assets that I can depend on in case of any financial hiccups. Also, they will be of help once my children transition to secondary schools I will be in a position to sell some and take them to school. Additionally, I had to start a business (selling vegetables) within my village. I now have a reliable source of income that I can talk about unlike before whereby I used to depend on my spouse for all my needs. With the remaining amount, I bought sufficient foodstuff for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was very early on one of the fine mornings while still in bed when I heard a message tone on my phone. I did not bother to check since I was still sleepy. When I jumped out of bed I had so many thoughts thus did not remember to check on the message till 8am when I wanted to call someone is when I saw the envelope on the phone screen. Upon checking, I jumped in happiness since the message was going to assist me in solving some pending issues that I was unable to tackle. It was the first transfer from GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, my living condition was not pleasing at all. I used to struggle so much to make ends meet but most of the time, my efforts were fruitless. But since the day I received the transfer, things turned into a new leaf. My children and I have an access to food not as before, I was also able to pay the fee arrears and for once, I have a modern standard bed and a mattress. I am quite sure that, if it were not for GiveDirectly I could not afford these things anytime soon.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, I opted to buy a bed and a mattress for KES 15000.00 because I had neither a bed nor a mat to sleep on. I also paid KES 4000.00 school fees for my two primary school children because they were being sent home regularly because of the fee arrears they had. After settling the school fee issue, I bought some school uniforms for them for KES 1500.00. I also bought four goats and five chickens at KES 12000.00 and 2000.00 respectively. Thereafter, I used the remaining amount in buying some food and clothes for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For the past 6 years in marriage, I have not been able to sleep cormfotably, with my 3 children. My 3 children who are below 5 years sleep on mat and I sleep on torn pieces of mattress. All my nights are tormenting especially when I have to meet with my husband, I wake up very tired and feel I have not slept enough. Upon receiving this first transfer of 55,000 KSH, I plan to buy beddings, that is 2 beds and 2 mattresses one for my children and one for me and my spouse. The cost will amount to 40000 KSH.the rest of the transfer I will use it for to buy 2 goats which I will start rearing so I can sell during drought season.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband bought new motorbike mid last year and is supporting us to go to clinic and even when need be to visit other relatives far away.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I work as charcoal burner and at the moment I have difficulties in supporting my family, because currently my husband is jobless and I have to work alone, the charcoal business is not doing well at the moment, my children need school uniforms, clothing so at the moment, life is so tough for me.
