What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I was enrolled in the program, my goal was to build a house to replace the one that we are currently living in as it can collapse anytime. I am a local mason and building local muddy house doesn't earn me money which I can pay school fees for my four children, provide basic needs for them and build a house. I was left with no choice rather than focusing on major priorities which are providing basic needs and paying school fees but my biggest fear is loosing my family through house collapse tragedy. Since I'm a mason, I have managed to build a muddy structure on my own and the transfers have been very helpful with buying iron sheets and other roofing materials. I spend the whole amount to buy iron sheets and I'm happy that I was able to completely build and roof one room which my family will be moving in soon. I'm looking forward to complete the other room so that we can have a fairly shared space in our house.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly does well in giving everyone support without discrimination. Everyone is empowered in the village including those who have never owned phones in their lives let alone having an income of Ksh 3000 per month. This is a real shock to everyone in the village. No one expected this. We are so great full for the support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My children who are in primary school had fee arrears of Ksh 2000. I, therefore, cleared the fee arrears with the recent transfers so that they could be allowed in class. This allowed them to concentrate on their studies, and I am happy their performance improved because they did not miss classes as was the case before. Part of the money I used to purchase some of their clothing to replace the old worn-out out ones that they had outgrown. I was amazed at stunning they looked on Christmas day. It has been years since I bought them decent clothing. I am grateful to Give Directly for making me a proud parent.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had woken very early that day because I do casual jobs and one of them includes burning wood for charcoal, so that day I was busy making charcoal and the kids had actually come to my place of work earlier that day to remind me about the pending balance in tuition fee and soon after the message came in at around nine in the morning and it seemed heaven sent. I was genuinely very happy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Ensuring that my children stay in school has been quite important and the funds I received helped me do that so I am much thankful and in the future I plan on renovating my house since I receive this funds monthly and I do not have to be worried over issues concerning education for my children any more.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the money I went ahead to settle the pending balance in school fees for my children since I had not paid for that term and they only reason as to why they had yet to be sent home is because I sweet talked the school administration into giving me more time to look for the money that I owed. So I went ahead and paid KES 600 that was split between the four of my kids and I was not done but that would at least keep the school at bay in the mean time as I looked for more money. Apart from that I decided to buy maize flour so that we could have a meal since occasionally we would go hungry so I bought five packets which cost me KES 500. Then I also bought three chicks that I planned on rearing and hopefully eventually after they produced I could start a business and earn some money.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been relying on charcoal burning for my livilihood. Apart from the the land being deforestated the market is another challenge.I have been praying to get capital so as to start buying and selling of goats on market days but in vain. GiveDirictly has come right on point. I will spend my transfers in this business. Especially during this dry season, goats are cheaply sold. With KES 3000 a month, I can buy two goats and sell at a profit of KES 500 each. I will use the profit realised to provide basic needs for my family of six.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We have been facing wrangles within our extended family for years. Early this year, I decided to migrate and start my own homestead. Months have gone, and I can testify my heart is full of joy and at peace without any external interferances.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been working as a shamba boy for years getting a monthly salary of KES 2000. This could not be enough to cater for the needs of my fast growing family of four children. My mother also looks up on me for her living.Upto todate, I have been looking for a job without success. Currently I do burn charcoal which is challenged by laws enforced banning the practice.
