How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After spending the first and the second transfer on all the projects I had listed down during enrollment, am glad that I was able to initiate all of them and proud to have completed some while others are still running. Currently, I don't have any new goals since I am still monitoring the previously started projects that I initiated after receiving the second transfer,
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
After enrollment into the program and receiving all that I was promised by the officers who visited our village, I was so grateful because I managed to accomplish all that I had planned. I can't complain at all but am still thankful to GiveDirectly for the great support not only to me but also to every household in the village. Everything was well done as the results can testify to the satisfaction of every recipient within the village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had been buying milk for quite a long time for my family of six. Over that period I had been spending a lot buying from the neighborhood the pushed me to try accumulating some savings to obtain a heifer. School fees had also been pushing hard, and every time I tried to save for the purchase of a cow, my children would be sent home and had no option but to use my savings in settling their school fees. On receiving the second transfer, I saw it as a great opportunity to finally spend KES30000 on buying a four-month in-calf heifer. I also spent KES10000 on paying school fees for my four children currently in primary school, obtained clothing for every household member at a total of KES5000, and used the remaining amount on improving my restaurant business and buying household foodstuff.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Confirming the receipt of $506 in my account was the best moment in my life. I was filled with joy that came with the hope of transforming all that my children and I have always hoped for since the death of their father. I was out attending to my casual work when I received the notification bearing the good news. I had to continue since I was working on someone's project that needed to be done before the end of that day. I later shared the news with my children in the evening when I got home and thus aroused the celebration mood as they too had been anticipating this.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily is the great hope of seeing the completion of two new houses in our household. This is a great feeling not only for me but also for my children who had always been afraid to invite their friends over for the fear that they will not bear with the poor condition of my old house. They are now happy, confident, and their esteem is higher than before as the new home is all they ever wished for.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Moving out of the tiny grass-thatched hut that we have lived in with my six children for 10 years since my husband passed on had been so hard. All trials to accumulate resources towards putting up a bigger and a more decent have always failed. On receiving this first transfer, it was a great opportunity for me to demolish and construct a new one on the same spot using the same materials obtained from the old one. The transfer has brought back the once lost hope in my household as I have already moved into the new kitchen as the other better house nears completion. I was so lucky that on receiving the transfer, most of the construction materials were being sold within the village by the retail sellers who ferried their goods to the village knowing that everyone needed them then. This saved the transport cost for my 36 iron sheets, nails, and also hinges which took approximately $350 of my first transfer. I also managed to spend $40 on foodstuff, $80 on clothing for my children and saved the remaining for the labor force on the ongoing construction work.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money is a big boost for me because I will use approximately 15000 to build a better house for my family. KSHS 30000 will enable me to buy a dairy cow and KSHS 10000 will be used in paying school fees for my 5 children who are primary school. This is a one time opportunity that I want to use wisely so that I can bring about change in our livelihood.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning because I have rested in the night and ready to take up my chores. I normally do house chores in the morning and then go and look for casual labour in a nearby farm till evening when I come home tired.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of finances is my biggest worry. I have to rely on casual labor so that I can provide basic needs to my children. Ever since I lost my husband in 2012, life has been a struggle for my. I am the sole provider and this mean I have to work extra hard everyday so that my family can get their daily bread.
