How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Now that I have my own piece of land and some livestock bought using the transfer from GiveDirectly, my new goal is to build a house in that piece of land. I am currently living in my father's land which does not allow me the flexibility of doing any kind of development that I would wish to. Having this house will give the independence and freedom to do my own developments.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What I loved most of about GiveDirectly is the freedom and the trust that they gave us to chose what to spend the money on. This entrusts us the responsibility to spend it prudently and in thing that improves our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the first transfer from GiveDirectly, I was able to purchase a piece of land but I could not pay the whole amount needed then. When I received the second transfer therefore, I first paid the Ksh. 15000 owed for the piece of land. I also bought a dairy cow for KSh. 26,000. This will ensure we have an assured supply of milk for my family. I used the rest of the transfer to buy three young goats for rearing, hopefully they multiply and get the sell then in the future for a profit.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 am and I was about to wake up when I heard my phone hence notifying me of a new message. I reached out for it from where I had placed it the previous night and I checked what the SMS could all be about. I was surprised when I opened it and I found out that it was indicating that we had received the promised transfer of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and I immediately informed my wife of the good news. She was so happy too and we thanked God. We now knew that we were going to fulfill the plans that we had made.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that the transfer has brought into our lives is that we now have land of our own. We thus now have the freedom to till and plant any crop that we wish to plant. This was not possible in our father's land since he is still the one in control and our family size is big. We are thus glad and grateful to GiveDirectly for making this possible for us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 40000 of our recent transfer on buying a piece of land. The piece of land was being sold at KES 50000 but we convinced the owner to allow us to pay KES 40000 with a promise to pay the remaining amount once we get the next transfer. We bought two points of an acre. We bought the land because we wanted land of our own. We are still living on our father's land and our family size is big. The land is still being controlled by our father and hence one does not have the freedom to till and plant anything he wants. We have been meaning to buy a piece of land of our own but we were not in a position to since we didn't have the money. I am a carpenter and I at times get hired by some schools to do roofing in their structures. The money that I usually get paid is little and is only enough to buy food and at times use some to pay school fees for my child. We are thus glad because of this program that GiveDirectly came up with for our village. Other than that, we also spent KES 7000 on buying a goat. We bought it so that we can have a source of milk for our consumption. We do not have a cow of our own and hence we have been relying on the milk that we are supplied with from home. With the remaining transfer amount, we spent it on buying food. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean a better place to stay with my family. I was given a small piece of share within the compound of my father. We are five men at home and we all live in one acre of a land which belongs to my father. I have been working hard to buy a piece of land but since I provide for my family, I end up using the money to buy food for them. Recently I secured a casual job in a nearby school and earn an average of KES1500 in a week. We consume this by buying food and other household needs.I am greatfull that my ambition to buy a piece of land and building a house will be realized through this transfers from Givedirectly.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the past three months we have been able to work smoothly in school. The job job has been running all through which have made me to sustain my family by providing for them. We have been able to afford our basic needs in the household which brings happiness in the family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge that I currently face is financial constraints. I am a casual worker at a nearby school and my average earning is KES1500 in a week. This is not a daily job as well as it depends with the availability of the job. I have wanted to start a small business of poultry keeping but the compound is small and cannot accommodate the structure. This transfers will aid me in starting this ambition.
