How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I have now is to save some money from the small business that I do to build a house. I used the first and the second transfer on purchasing land. I wish to build a house on that land and relocate with my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Most of the people who received the transfer from GiveDirectly spent it well. Most were able to build better houses while others invested in different businesses. All this has improved their living standard to be much better than before. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 50,000 on purchasing a piece of land. I live with my parents on the same land. I had always wished to own my land but this was not possible because I did not have the money. I depend on small businesses in town and the money that I would get was for school fees and household basic needs. I did not have the money to save so that I can buy land. Currently, I have purchased land and I am so grateful for the support from GiveDirectly. I am planning on building a better house and relocating with my children. This has always been my dream and I am so happy because I have fulfilled with. Were it not GiveDirectly all this could have taken quite some time to happen.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 8 am and I had just gotten home from the river to fetch water when I thought of checking my phone which I had left in the house. I checked it and I saw that I had a new message. I opened it to check the contents and wow! I could not believe my eyes when I read that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was so happy that my children noticed it. They asked me what was going on and I told them about the good news. They were happy too upon hearing this and we celebrated together giving thanks to God and GiveDirectly for the blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. My children and I are happy because we now have our piece of land where we are going to settle and call home. We will be able to live in peace away from the constant family conflicts that usually arise.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my recent transfer on buying a piece of land. I bought a point of an acre at KES 50000. I decided to buy the piece of land because it has always been my desire to have a land of my own where I can move to and settle with my children in peace. I have been living at my home with my children for quite a long time and sometimes family conflicts arise between us and my sister-in-laws'. I was, however, not in a position to buy one since I didn't have the large sum of money that is needed to do so and I have children in school. It has hence been a struggle to get money for paying their school fees. I usually depend on casual jobs of farming to earn a living. I also usually go to the market on market day to do casual work of selling clothes for the businesswomen. The money that I get paid is not much, it is usually only enough to buy food and essential household items such as sugar, soap, and tea leaves. Other than that, I also usually buy vegetables and I supply them to the school where one of my children is studying. By doing so, I get to pay his school fees little by little. With the remaining transfer amount, I spent KES 3000 on paying off part of a medical bill debt, and the other KES 2000, I bought food with it. I am hence grateful to GiveDirectly for their big help.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Currently I am living in my father's piece of land and I share same compound with my in-laws. There are usual fights and unnecessary exchange of words. I am much uncomfortable living here and I desire buying a small piece with a cost of KES 50,000. This will enable me reunite my children including one who stays and works as an househelp at Kap Kwen town. I appreciate Give Directly's effort of visiting my village.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last month of December my son who works as a casual laborer made my Christmas day enjoyable. I bonded and shared happiness with my three children. I cherish his kindness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Regular fights with my in-laws is a norm. We currently exchange words which atimes escalates to physical fights. I feel insecure.
