How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to buy a 1000ltr tank that I want it to support my farming project where I will plant mchicha, tomatoes, spinach, and other vegetables that I would sell and generate some income to sustain myself and also pay school fees for my grandchildren who their mother is unemployed and depends on me.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving me cash through a the phone I don't think there is anything you need to change
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used $55 of the second transfer to purchase 1 big sufuria that can make 2kg of ugali, 1 big thermos that can serve 12 cups of tea, and three basins since which marked a significant shift from borrowing utensils and using a basin that we always made from cutting leaking jerricans. This was an idea of my elder daughter, Rehema who was tired of borrowing the same. currently, I feel relieved because I have a sense of self-reliance. I saved the rest amount of the transfer as I await 22nd December 2023 to get my annual savings to build my 3-bedroom house using the 2600 clay stone that I had prepared before. Give directly has helped me build a house that I have wished to have for a long time but since am the sole breadwinner fueled by my labor work of burning charcoal, I earn $3 per day which mirrors the determination to provide not only the subsistence but also a sense of normalcy. Achieving these small things has and will transform my life and turn a necessity into a step toward a more self-sufficient future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I first signed up for GiveDirectly's support, I admit I had reservations about whether they could truly help everyone in our community. But when the day finally came and I received the transfer, my emotions were all over the place. It was like a dream turning into reality right before my eyes. I couldn't believe that something I had doubted was happening. A rush of euphoria flooded over me, and tears of happiness streamed down my face. Seeing that message in my inbox made me believe I was part of this program, and I was going to receive the $1100 from GiveDirectly. It was a mix of relief, gratitude, and an overwhelming sense of hope for the future.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Life used to be a constant battle. Every day was a struggle to put food on the table as I relied on the unpredictable income from making and selling charcoal. There were times when my family had to endure hunger for up to two days a week. But everything changed when I became a recipient of GiveDirectly's cash transfer. The impact was profound. The hunger that used to haunt us has now become a thing of the past. I've left behind the exhausting trips to the forest to make charcoal, now able to focus on other opportunities. The support from GiveDirectly has given me a new lease on life, and I'm incredibly thankful for the positive change it's brought to my family and me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Once the cash transfer arrived, I felt a mix of excitement and relief. The old house I had been living in was on the verge of collapsing, and I knew it was time for a change. So, I decided to invest the money wisely. First thing, I purchased a large 310-litre water tank, envisioning how it would aid me in my project. With this tank, I could store water efficiently, a crucial element for the upcoming construction. With water secured, I embarked on making interlocking blocks. Day after day, I mixed cement and pressed it into molds, creating each brick with care and determination. These blocks would be the foundation of my new home, and I am determined not to be held back by any lack of materials. I want to ensure that when construction begins, there will be no interruptions due to shortages. Each block I made seemed like a stepping stone towards stability and security.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I am a single mother living with my daughter and five grandchildren. I do casual jobs for survival though it has been a while now without working because I suffer from pressure and ulcers. I now depend on my son who works at Mombasa. The walls of my house got demolished during the heavy rains season and now the family family suffers from the heavy winds. I will use $600 to change my house from muddy to a permanent one. I will also use $400 to buy ten goats as an investment. This will make me independent in the future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am single mother of five children. Over years I have been living alone here at home since the children are out for work in the coastal urban centres. On March this year one of my daughter came home and since then she has been here with me. She gives me company and sometimes takes me to hospital when I fall sick. I feel happy because the loneliness is no more.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been suffering from pressure and ulcers for over five years now. I can not engage on any hard activities due to this problem. This has limited my sources of income and as a result sometimes I go without food. Healthy issues is the challenge I am currently facing in life.
