How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The moment my wife left, it shattered the hope of building a decent house for my family. Things were tough, and I did not see the need because I had lost hope. But the moment I received my transfer, it revived my hopes. Therefore, I plan on building a decent house for my children because the house that we are currently living in is small. To realise this goal. I plan on saving money from my daily wages.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am forever grateful for the support that brought happiness to the lives of my children. Seeing them enjoying a cup of milk daily makes me a fulfilled parent. All this would not have been possible if I had not received money from GiveDirectly. In my opinion, I have not encountered things that needed to be corrected in how the organization conducts its work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Life became unbearable the moment my wife left me. It forced me to raise my children single-handedly. Life was unbearable because I depended on casual jobs to earn a living, which was barely enough. Upon receiving my second transfer, I was relieved because I knew that I would be able to buy a dairy cow which I had yearned for so long. Therefore, I bought a cow worth $300. With it, I knew that I would be able to cut down on the cost of buying milk. I could not afford a cow due to financial constraints. I am so happy that my three children will have enough milk for their daily consumption, thus I am grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was taking my sister who was unwell to the hospital when I heard a message notification from my phone. I stopped to find out who might have texted me that morning. I could not believe my eyes. It was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. This was one of the main priorities that we had planned with my family. Because we used to buy milk and this was so costly for us. My sister was so happy too. I withdrew the money the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me since I do not have a continuous source of income. I depend on small-scale farming and causal jobs at home. These two combined earned me a small income and I was not able to save some money. The money that I could get was only for household basic needs and school fees for my children. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy and the priority was purchasing a dairy cow. Currently, I get enough milk for the family. My children are so happy because they no longer miss getting the milk like before. I save the money that I could have used to buy milk for other household items. I sell the surplus milk to earn an income. This was my main concern and GiveDirectly has enabled me to fulfill it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 35,000 on purchasing a dairy cow. This was one of my priorities since I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but it was not possible due to recurrent household basic needs and I did not have the saving. Currently, I no longer get worried like before because I have enough milk for the family. I spend KES 7,000 on purchasing building materials ready to start renovating my house. When I have collected all the necessary materials I will start the renovation process. For the rest of the money, I bought food and clothes for my children. GiveDirectly has enabled me to fulfill my dream and I am so grateful.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a father of 3 children, all of them are schooling in the nearby Kiproroget primary school. They solely depend on me to fend for them. I separated from my wife last year June and life took a different turn for the worse, taking care of my children alone is a tall order for me. I am so bothered and unsettled. I depend on casual jobs which pay little and are unsustainable, I am employed as a power saw assistant earning approximately KES 300 per day when the work is available. This is a job that can pay well if I had the means to own one. Sometimes good things happen and this help from Give Directly is the best thing ever to happen to me. I intend to use KES 80000 to purchase a power saw to be self-employed and be sufficient in income generation. I will use the remaining amount to buy food and clothes for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I derive a lot of happiness from my children. They give me hope and the reason to live. I work hard to ensure that they get the best that I can provide. Although my wife left us I take solace from my children, I am so elated to be around them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My wife left me in June last year. We never had any dispute before she left, she had requested to visit their home in the nearby Transmara never to come back. My children occasionally asked me their mother's whereabouts, a question I cannot sufficiently answer and this has always given me sleepless nights because of the stress I get as a result. The children were accustomed to their mother doing the household chores like washing their clothes and cleaning them, I have assumed both roles of a mother and father and life is difficult for me.
