How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to open a sustainable business that can help me get money for meeting the needs of my family especially paying school fees for my child. I do not have a job and I have noticed that in my nearby center, there is no one selling second-hand clothes. I would like to hence start the business and an M-pesa too. I, however, do not have the money currently for starting the business but I have some goats and a sheep that I bought with the transfers. I am rearing them and when they multiply in number, I plan to sell some to get money for starting the business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by holding a meeting with the community members before starting the enrollment process. This is because the people became knowledgeable about the program. They also learned that they need to plan on how they were going to spend the money before they could receive it. Most of them hence spent the transfer well because they had already planned. There is, however, one thing that I would like GiveDirectly to reconsider. There are single mothers who were left out during enrollment and yet they deserved to be helped since they are needy and have children to take care of. I think GiveDirectly should send people to the village prior to starting the enrollment process so that they can get a true picture or reality that is in the village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my second transfer money on buying a calf. I bought the calf at KES 20000. I then bought two goats at KES 9000 and a sheep at KES 4000. With the remaining amount of money, I used part of it in buying 15 more chickens which were being sold at an average cost of KES 350. The rest I used in constructing a poultry unit. I had bought two goats and another calf with the first transfer. I decided to buy more so that they can help me in the future when they reproduce and multiply. I have the goal of starting the business of selling second-hand clothes and an M-pesa. I hence plan to sell some of the goats and the sheep's offspring in the future and use the money to start the business that will help me in meeting the needs of my family. I decided to build the poultry unit and buy the chickens since the chickens were going to help me in getting money for buying food and other household goods such as soap, sugar, etc through the sale of eggs. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for the great help that you gave me.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy I remember it was around 9:15 am. I was cleaning the utensils. When I was done,I decided to check my phone. I didn't know there was mesage from GiveDirectly. When I saw the confirmation message I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money before. My family members felt so happy too. I knew I would be able to buy goats and chickens as an investment. I also grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a goats and chickens. This is the best investment that I had always wished to start. I depend on small scale farming and small business of selling second hand clothes. This two earns me a small income and it was only for household basic needs and stock up the business. I didn't had an extra income to purchase a goats and start a poultry keeping project. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because I knew I would be able to fulfill my dream. Currently I have two goats and my poultry keeping project is active. I know it the next few months things gonna be better. My business will have expand and my goats could have multiply. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly all this could not have happened soon.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money to buy the goats. This is an investment because goats reproduce faster and helps during an emergency. I spent KES 10,000 to start a poultry keeping project. This earns me an income from the sales of eggs. I bought some furniture and bedding. I spent some on check up since I was not feeling well. The rest of the money I spent on food and clothes. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am physically disabled. I have a problem with my right leg which started long time ago when I was still young. This problem cannot allow me to do heavy task. So when I get this transfer I would like to start small business of opening a kiosk. This will help me generate income for my upkeep and also to take my son to school who is yet to join pre school come next year. I need capital of about KES 3000 to start up. I also live in a house given to me by my parents, i want to be independent and build my own house. So when i get this transfer my dream will be fulfilled.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is the morning. This is when i wake up feeling less pain in my leg and I will be able to do light duties.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship is my sickness which has rendered me disable. I cannot do heavy chore like going to the farm. I have spent a lot of money going to hospital due to a number of surgeries performed on my leg. This has depleted all the money I had even the little I had saved for capital to start my kiosk business.
