How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I could have set many goals for myself but I have no money and so I do not want to lie to you . But I really wish to buy a television and 3-seater sofa set as soon as the construction of my house is completed , probably by August . I just want my house to look like that of other people in my village , that way , they'll respect me . I do not know how much it will cost but that is my dream and I'm trusting God to see it come true .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly does well to give people money for them to use it on whatever they choose . By so doing , it has eradicated poverty in this village . We really appreciate because we have manage to pay school fees for our children and also bought cows . Our children no longer stay at home due to school fees balances . There is nothing you are not doing right , everything about Give Directly is just good .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
You know we have no stable source of income . I always look for firewood and sell to people around . My husband , who we depend on for basic need is a mason but employed on casual terms . A bigger part of the second transfer went on constructing my new house . The one I had before was not enough for my family of 4 children . So we decided to add 1 room and a verandah . I can't remember the exact prices and quantities but my husband went to buy cement and red oxide . I then spent $100 on sand and $105 on labour . My husband had never completed paying my dowry , so he too $100 and went to pay my dowry , this made me to feel so happy . I also spent $84 for school fees for my 3 children who are in primary school. They had accrued arrears of $28 each . We had no food in the house and the prices had really hiked , so I spent $80 on 1 bag of maize. Without this transfer I wouldn't have done all these with ease , I'm so grateful to Give Directly .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember it was during the day and I was relaxing at home when I overheard my neighbors talking about something exciting. I paid keen attention and I could tell that they were talking about received the transfers. Since I had left my phone inside the house, I rushed inside, picked it and opened my messenger where I confirmed that I had received the transfers. I was so excited that I called my husband and from my end, I could tell how overjoyed he was.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Previously, we didn't think that we could afford to put up a permanent roof because of financial constraints. We are now looking forward to having a permanent house with iron sheets roof and metallic windows courtesy of the transfers. We are so grateful to GiveDirectly for supporting us towards achieving this goal because we couldn't have done it by ourselves.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a housewife and my family has been relying on my husband who is a mason. We have been living in a very weak, muddy single room and my husband had started building a two bedroom house so that we could move out of this danger. Although he was able to build the structure towards completion, he did not have the financial capacity to put up a permanent roof. We had settled on coconut leaves for roofing which we had already started preparing by the time I was enrolled. When I was called and informed that I had qualified for the program and I was going to receive my first transfer in May, we changed our minds and now settled on putting up a permanent roof. I spend KES 23,000 to buy iron sheets, KES 17,000 to buy a cow and the balance on food and other household necessities. I'm planning to spend my second transfer to complete roofing and put up permanent windows.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
In our efforts to own a new house, my husband and I managed to construct one but due to inadequate finances, we could not afford to do the finishing. This has forced us to live in our old house whose roof is braving the wrong wind because the poles were damaged by termites. With this cash grant, I intend to spend my first transfer, 55000 KES to ensure my house gets completed. This will allow us to live in a decent house and thus, a peaceful life. On the other hand, I will spend the remaining transfer on livestock keeping to have a long-term project that will support my children's education in the future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In February this year, my husband withdrew all his savings and bought 30 pieces of iron sheets to roof our new house. This brought back my hope of living in a decent house and I am now so much optimistic about finishing it once I receive my transfers from GiveDirectly. Hence, this is what has given me joy in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest worry at the moment is the uncertainty that comes with the rising cost of living yet our source of income is from casual work at construction sites. This robs away my joy because I am always worried about how life will be in case my husband misses the opportunity of working. As of now, he is making 500 KES per day unlike before when he used to make 1000 KES in a day. Thus, I consider financial instability as the main challenge that I am currently facing in my life.
