What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I decided to start a cafeteria business with the cash I received from GiveDirectly. It was a dream I had for a long time, and now I had the means to make it a reality. I used $209 to buy all the necessary cooking items like pots, pans, and utensils. I also invested in making the cafeteria comfy and inviting by getting tables and chairs for customers to sit comfortably. It was important to create a pleasant atmosphere. Additionally, I used $100 to buy enough stock to last a while since it was a new business venture. The cafeteria business took off better than I expected. It not only provides me with a steady income but also allows me to provide for my family. With some of the remaining amount, I bought a bed and a mattress for $75. Sleeping on the floor had been tiring, and now I could finally rest comfortably. The remaining amount was used to buy food for my family, ensuring that we had enough to eat. I'm grateful for the opportunity GiveDirectly gave me, as it not only helped me fulfill my dream but also improved the quality of life for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The ability to obtain financial support from the organization was the finest thing that ever occurred to me. It enabled me to address critical demands and improve the well-being of my family. What spiked out, though, was the GiveDirectly staff's outstanding friendliness and approachability. They were natural people who were concerned about my condition. Their sensitivity and willingness to listen helped to make the entire process feel personal and helpful, which I value.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My biggest dream, once I have some money, is to purchase a piece of land and build a home where I can provide a stable and loving environment for my children. Presently, we reside in my parents' house, a situation brought about by the challenges in my marriage, stemming from family disagreements. Having a place to call our own would not only signify a fresh start but also offer my children the security and comfort they deserve. It's a goal that keeps me motivated and focused on securing a better future for my family.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For 7 years since I got married, we have been living in a tiny, rusty irony roofed house that is leaking. The situation worsens during the rainy season because we are forced to stay awake the whole night with our two one-year-old kids. After receiving the transfer, I spent $400 to construct a spacious, two-roomed mud-walled house for my family. Currently, I am pleased to reside in a better shelter like other community members. In addition, I used part of the remaining amount to purchase new clothes for all the family members. Earlier, we were wearing old torn attires which makes us feel uncomfortable since my husband's watchman job earns him very little income. Lastly, I bought sufficient foodstuffs with the remaining amount that we have been using since we are experiencing famine in our area due to climate change.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Living in a decent, spacious shelter with the family is the biggest difference in my life. Currently, I am happy that we no longer have to suffer during the onset of rainy season. Furthermore, I am able to cater for the basic needs of our family of 2 kids and my spouse like food and clothing without struggling.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at the nearby tailoring shop to repair my kid's clothes that were torn. I vividly remember it was around 3 pm when I received message notification on the phone. After checking, I was surprised to see the Mobile money message revealing that I had received the transfers from give directly. I was overwhelmed with joy about receiving the cash assistance that would fulfill the dream of owning a better and more spacious shelter for my family of 4 members.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I'm currently struggling a lot with lack of income. I'm a professional hair dresser but haven't been able to get a job with the local salons in the nearest shopping center. Lately I have been planning on starting my own, however, the biggest challenge to that is the fact that I can't even raise capital neither can my husband afford it. He works as a security guard in Kilifi town, but seemingly earns too little that he can only send me $10 monthly. This amount is also somehow not enough to take care of myself and our two years old set of twins I'm living with right here in the village.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I would say I'm always happy every evening because I normally get to finally call my husband on phone and talk with him for some time. I find a lot of joy in this firstly because it keeps us in touch as a family even though we're several kilometers apart. It's also quite soothing to finish off the day listening to sentimental confessions after a long day of taking care of my twins. This is practically my source of joy and pride.
What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I Would like to open a beauty shop cum a mini salon when I get this money. Though I might not receive enough to roll out my plan in it's entirety, I will start with what I have then grow it to accommodate all that I need. My estimated initial capital is $300 including cost of renting a premise. The rest of the money will go into building a family home. As you have seen, I got married when my husband didn't have a house but his mother just gave us her kitchen to use. It's been serving us but now it's time to upgrade and get our own place. If I continue using this kitchen I'll feel stuck at one level.
