How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is much transformed ever since I received the cash transfers. In the past I was staying in a dilapidated thatched house which was leaking. Currently, I am very happy that my two roomed permanent house is almost complete.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well to support the poor people who were living in abject poverty. GiveDirectly has greatly improved the lives of many people in my community positively as opposed to the negative impacts which I have not yet witnessed.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I purchased iron sheets worth UGX 806000 and cement worth UGX 180000. I paid the builders UGX 250000. The balance of UGX 300000 will be spent on purchasing a cow.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I am filled with joy that the cash transfer is facilitating the construction of our two roomed house which had stalled for over two years. Secondly, we now dress well and decently compared to before when we could dress in tattered clothes. In the past, I had to depend entirely on agriculture to sustain the family. This was not profitable and it would have taken me more two years to complete the house.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy when I read the mobile money message that night. I was very happy because I had never received such unconditional cash transfer before.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I purchased timber worth UGX 600000 and bricks worth UGX 250000 and cement worth UGX 180000 and iron bars worth UGX 110000. I also bought household items such as mattress worth UGX 180000 and a bed worth UGX 80000. The balance of UGX 160000 will be spent on purchasing other household necessities.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to build an iron roofed house. The one that I am occupying leeks due to scarcity of grass. I also intend to buy a cow that can reproduce in the long run. I am sure this will help me take care of some household needs especially when I sell. In case of any balance, I hope to buy household items for example beddings and utensils.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the noon time especially after I have had lunch. This gives me the strength and energy to work better knowing that the next day has to be taken care of.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I am faced with is poverty. There is no money to facilitate my household needs. Due to scarcity of grass, I have always wanted to build an iron roofed house so as to have a descent accommodation but I have never had the capacity to do so. With the coming of GiveDirectly now, I believe my dream will come to pass.
